I've been going to them almost 15 years and I had the same car all that time and they took care of it. They're very pleasant, they know my truck very well. They try to give me a close enough estimate as they can.

Here are some characteristics of Mike Byer Auto I particularly like: 1) I can trust them. Early on, I sought second opinions from family and friends who possess auto mechanic expertise, and they always said that what Mike Byer Auto recommended, or the service they performed, made good sense, and that they clearly did not try to "pad the profits" by recommending unneeded services. 2) Competitive prices. I solicited estimates from other auto mechanic shops in Asheville for some of the problems I was having with my cars, and Mike Beyer Auto always had the same or lower prices. 3) They have a 'loaner car' available if you schedule an appointment--which is the way to do it with top-notch shops like this one as they have gobs of loyal customers and they do no lack for work. 4) They worked doggedly to figure out causes of complicated problems, often charging less than they could, considering the number of hours they put in. They like solving problems and won't give up until they determine a solution! 5) At the same time, they will promptly acknowledge if a problem is outside their scope of expertise, and recommend a specialist. (I never needed to see a specialist, but I have a friend who did and he really appreciated how up front and helpful Mike was.) 6) The staff are polite, courteous, and informative. They are also relaxed and low-key, which is a great antidote to the hyperkinetic car sales people one encounters at dealerships. 7) They don't offer some of the flashy 'look and feel' of the car dealers (although their waiting room is comfy and they have free coffee!), but then again, they charge *much less* than the dealers. If you want to be treated like you walk on water in a sea of pretension, then go to an expensive, glitzy dealership. If you want a good old fashioned auto mechanic shop, where the staff are smart and work hard, but are also easy-going and down-to-earth, I highly recommend Mike Byer Auto & Truck Repair.

"While I appreciate the review I don't understand the B in quality as we didn't do any work as the engine had a hole in the side of the block when it came in. We also loaned you a vehicle for several days free of charge while you looked for another one, we then brokered the deal with the salvage yard taking no money as a fee. Mike"

"Thanks for your good review but to add comment to the mechanic not being forthcoming I would suspect it was the counter personnel and not the technician. An automatic transmission is a complex device and little understood by those who do not work on them. If ever you have any questions of a technical nature my technicians are instructed to talk to the customers and explain what has been done and if you have further questions please feel free to call me and I will be glad to explain anything I can. I sometimes tend to explain too much though and some customers eyes tend to glaze over after a while. Thanks again, Mike"

I had a NC inspection done by another shop - they told me I needed $1200 in repairs in order to pass the inspection. I took my car ('95 Volvo 940) to Mike Byer's for the repairs. Dropped the car off on Thursday afternoon and it was ready before noon Friday. And I did not actually need the expensive repairs the other shop claimed. They fixed what was needed, did the inspection, and I was set to go. Oh, and they also gave me a loaner car! I thought only the fancy shmancy, super-expensive dealer service centers did that. Nope - I jetted around town in a perky, manual transmission Ford Escort, instead of having to use taxis or rent a car (most of their loaners are automatic transmissions). They don't always have loaners available but it's worth asking about.
Mr. Byer and his staff were friendly, professional, informative, and very reliable. I highly recommend Mike Byer's.

Battery kept losing its charge. Byer did a check, found alternator needed replacing, found a reconditioned unit at considerable savings over dealer's quoted price. Installed it and battery's worked fine ever since. The shop is friendly, clean, efficient and serves good coffee.

I called and made an appointment to get my car checked for and oil leak and perform a state inspection. I was greeted on time, in a friendly manner. My information was taken and appropriate follow up questions were asked. When completed, the mechanic who worked on my car and looked for the leaks talked to me himself and told me that he could not find a leak and gave me several options of what he could do if the leak persisted. They did not charge me for this assessment, only for the state inspection. I was in and out in thirty minutes without anyone trying to sell me anything extra.I feel like I have found an honest and capable auto repair shop and will be using them in the future for all my car service needs.

They do pretty much everything there with general mechanics. The thing I like about it you can make an appointment and you don't have to drop your car off at 6 am. If you need it they give you a loaner car. It is very clean. They have a nice waiting room with books. It's not a typical car place. They do a great job. He will probably keep my Honda running forever.

I will not go back there because I feel like the year time line for inspection is something they definitely should have known.
Response from Mike Byer Auto and Truck Repair
"In North Carolina an emissions inspection is far more than just not having a check engine light turned off. The federal emissions laws require that all vehicles manufactured in model year 1996 or newer have a computer that is capable of doing a self test for emissions, if the battery is disconnected or the check engine light is turned off it takes approximately fifty miles for all the readiness monitors to reset. If the readiness monitors are not set to pass it will fail inspection regardless of the state of the check engine light. We have no control over that, our computer simply connects to the state computer and the pass or fail is the decision of the state's computer. If the correct number of readiness monitors is not set to ready the computer will automatically reject the vehicle and the inspection cannot take place. As far as the law requiring inspections when licensing from another state I am still not certain of that, to my knowledge all vehicles being licensed in North Carolina and are model year 1996 or newer need to have an emissions inspection. To be certain if your vehicle needs an emission inspection I recommend calling your local Department of Motor Vehicles office to get the definative answers to your questions.
