All the work, except for the window repair, was completed in one day. The following morning work on the window was completed in about 1 hour.
Cox Auto Service was friendly, courteous, experienced, and professional.

"Thank you for allowing us to services your Jeep. We hope we can be of service in the future Ray"
On Thursday I started noticing a squeaking noise coming from the back of my car. I called Ray and he said to bring it in the following day. I couldn't get it there until late Friday afternoon. A technician tested the car and thought the noise was coming from the back hatch (door), which had nothing to do with the work they had done. Ray and the technician made an adjustment on the back hatch latch and they took it for another test drive. It was still squeaking so they lubricated the gasket. They repeated the process several times until they got the squeak stopped. On the last couple test drives the technician actually rode in the luggage area so he could determine where the noise was coming from. All this occurred while they were trying to close and take off for a week. When I asked what I owed Ray said "nothing". Now that is how to build customer loyalty.
The only thing that made me uncomfortable was the general lack of communication. It was true across the board, from what their schedule for looking at my trick would be to something as simple as where they wanted me to park it. When I called the next day, I was given only a rough idea when the truck would be looked at, and when I called after that time, I was given an equally vague description of what repairs would be needed, when they would happen, and what they would cost.
I work from home and my girlfriend has a car, so being without a vehicle for a week wasn't a huge issue. But if I worked a regular, 9-to-5 job or had an active, busy schedule, I would have found this vagueness infuriating.
When I finally got an update a week after dropping the truck off, the news was pretty good. The repairs would cost roughly half of the rough estimate I was originally given. When I picked the truck up a few days later, I was given only a rough outline of the work that had been done, and no additional insight about other needed repairs or problems to look out for going forward. It was a very short, functional kind of conversation.
The truck seems fine now, and the price seemed fair based on my own understanding of the problem and the repairs, but there was definitely no hand-holding through the process. If I didn't have a rough idea what work was done, I'd have no idea if I'd gotten a good deal or a rotten one. That's OK -- there's only so much you can say about replacing a pinion and a U-joint -- but it's something to keep in mind when taking your vehicle there.
Overall, I can recommend Cox Auto. I feel they treated me fairly enough for a shop that is clearly very busy. Ultimately, that's all I want from a auto shop.
There was little time to talk once I arrived. I had to get to the car rental place and my next appointment and it was past Ray's closing time, and so I next heard from him after the weekend. He said the whole engine would have to be replaced, which normally costs somewhere around $5,000. HOWEVER, he had already called around town and found a USED engine for my six year old car ... . .which would cost only $2,000. Better still, that engine had even fewer miles on it than my ruined engine had.
I really appreciated the fact that he'd taken the time to make those phone calls before getting back to me. It's good business to think ahead and consider how people will be affected by what you tell them. I'm glad he didn't wait for me to suggest finding a used engine, for that might not even have occurred to me.
I told him to go ahead and put the used engine in, and asked about how long it would take. When he said it might go into the following week, I asked if there were any chance of getting it done even a day sooner because of the car rental fees. He said he'd see what he could do, but that things take time, and I should be patient.
I called the rental place, negotiated another, longer rental contract, and kept my fingers crossed that I wouldn't have to pay for the rental much longer than the following week.
TWO DAYS LATER, Ray called and said my car was ready. He said he and his other mechanics had STAYED LATE in order to get my car back to me without my having to run up another week of car rental fees. I can't tell you how grateful I was for that kindness!
When I got the car back and drove it the following day, I noticed a smoky exhaust and the smell of something burning. When I phoned Ray, he said to just bring it back in and they'd look at it. They did, and it turned out to be just burnoff from the stuff that had gotten into the exhaust pipe. He said it would probably stop after I'd driven the car for a couple of days, but to bring it right back again if it continued.
Fortunately, he was exactly right. A couple of days later, that smokiness and odor were gone.
The car is now running as well as it did before.
Thank you Ray, thank you Cox, and thank you Angie's List!

Being new to Asheville I had no idea who to call so I joined Angie's List specifically to look at reviews of local repair shops. That's how I found Cox. I called at 4:30 pm and told Ray (?) my problem and he said that tomorrow was Christmas Eve and they'll be closing early and would remain closed until Jan 5, but if I could get the car to them within the next hour they'd begin work on it right away and try to have it done before tomorrow afternoon.
So I drove the car over there right away, dropped it off and one of his mechanics drove me home.
At around 1:00pm on Christmas Eve, today, he called and said it was ready and his mechanic would pick me up and take me to the shop to get the car. They not only fixed my car in a rush on a shortened day before a holiday, but they did a great job and charged what i thought was a VERY reasonable fee.
I will not even think about taking my card anywhere else from now on. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
