The mattress stank so bad for about a week it was making me feel sick. Fortunately that went away after a while. I was surprised at how bad it was though because the tag said it was made partly with organic materials. However, it was also extremely comfortable. So I decided to tough it out until it gassed out.
The other problem was, and still is, that the mattress is so heavy I have trouble getting fitted sheets off and on, let alone turning it. I had two very strong young men move some furniture for me about two months after I bought it and I asked them to turn the mattress. I warned them it was extremely heavy. I am a middle aged woman so of course they did not take me seriously. They ended up dropping the mattress on my venetian blinds and breaking the clip that held it in place. One of them strained his back. They then agreed with me that the mattress was unusually heavy.
Recently, I called the store to see if anything could be done about how heavy my mattress is. I wasn't really sure what I wanted, a lighter version perhaps. It just seemed like this was such an oddly heavy mattress, perhaps something had been done wrong when it was made. The young man I talked with referred to my age, saying he didn't want to say I was, "old," but that was basically the problem, and that a good quality mattress with two sides was going to be heavier than a one sided one. He also offered to have someone come turn it for me for $50. I told him about the two young men dropping it. He promised to have the owner call me. That has never happened.
I wasn't really sure how to rate this mattress and my buying experience. It's very comfortable to sleep on. But having two sides is kind of useless if I can't turn it.
I grew up during a time when all mattresses had two sides. I don't remember any of them being this heavy.
In this day of poor or nonexistent customer service, this company was a pleasure to deal with. They make quality products and provide excellent customer service, from the owner Mike down to the delivery crew. When my mattress and foundation were delivered I realized that the bed was too high for me. I called and asked if I could get a shorter foundation and they couldn't have been more accommodating. I subsequently bought a queen converted kit. Both these items were delivered on time and the delivery crew not only changed out the foundation, but put together the converter kit and assembled the antique bed, which is in my guest room. I feel that the entire staff went above and beyond what could be reasonably expected in terms of service. As I said, this experience was a pleasure from the beginning to the end.
.What a difference sleeping on these beds is; my stiff and achy morning back has disappeared, overnight. We love what we bought, could have spent less on "name brand" bedding but considering one spends about 1/3 of one's life sleeping, it's money well spent. Both beds have a 10 year non-prorated warranty, very impressive. And we have 30 days to choose whether we'd rather have the mattress modified to another style, though I'm sure we'll stay happy with what we have. We met the owner Mike who was also helpful, sincere and appreciative for our business. Because all their beds are constructed from scratch at their factory, they know exactly what's inside them, and seeing it all firsthand gave me a lot more confidence in what we were buying than I've ever had at any other mattress dealer or outlet.
I'll try to update this review a year from now, maybe two or three years also and post my impressions then. If you're out shopping for bedding and Asheville's in your orbit (or even outside of it) this is worth your time. I highly recommend Colton Mattress.
thought about, regarding how and with what materials mattresses are constructed in the support layers and the comfort layers, as well as what construction was required for different sleepers. It mentioned that salesmen at chain stores would likely not know about many of these things. Since the mattress underground was absolutely correct about that fact, I decided to look at one of
their suggestions, that a local or regional firm would provide a better mattress at a reasonable price. I was quite skeptical that this would bepossible, but decided to look local and found Colton Mattress.
What I found was truly amazing. Firstly, the salespeople at Colton knew all of the terms I had learned: HR vs. HD polyurethane foam in terms of density and resilience, talalay vs. Dunlop latex, ratings of latex, differences in the gauges and the flexibility of springs, differences in outer layers, two sided vs. one sided construction, etc. Secondly, they were able to clearly explain both how they construct their mattresses, and all of the options available to me. Thirdly, their price was reasonable. And we actually have a two-sided mattress again, something the larger firms try to dissuade you from buying!
Most importantly they take pride in their craftsmanship, and have a goal of making a mattress that allows their customer to get a good night?s sleep and for many years. They are not in business just to make the sale and then forget the customer. This was proven to me when the mattress I ordered proved to be too firm. They took back the mattress and rebuilt it at their expense. The fact that they were local made this possible. The fact that they stood by their product made it happen. I cannot say enough positive about this remarkable firm. Asheville is truly fortunate to have Colton here. If you do your research, the choice is clear.
I'm deaf (I read lips and body language and can pick up some sound). I walked in, hating buying beds because most of my long life, buying a bed is like going to a used car dealer and that's exactly what I felt at Sleepworld where I went after. I made it clear about my lack of hearing and the salesman heard and acknowledged that. It's important because it didn't happen when I went, "... a minute or two further down the road," afterward.
I was left alone to look and check things out. That was respectful. When I had questions (written down as I tried their beds), I walked around (now the salesman came to me to assist). The size of the bed became my dilemma du jour but it wasn't an issue with the fellow there. I made it clear I did not want a pillowtop, and again the salesman listened and did not attempt to shove me to pillowtops - that happened after down the road. (Notice the pattern.)
I got prices. I already knew how Colton works because we had been there a few years earlier and we were taken downstairs where beds were being made. The salesman did point out how the various beds were made by Colton. But, I landed on a bed not made by them that felt decent. Of course, I wrote down the info and looked up the bed on the internet. The written specs seemed unacceptable. I didn't like the brand.
The next day, I went back with a person who could hear. Since I didn't like the bed that appeared most comfortable, I asked if Colton could make a similar set (I hoped the quality would likely be better). They could and told me what they would do. I had a concern about out-gassing since I went through that stinky horror with other beds. I got an explanation as to why with the Colton it wouldn't be an issue (it wasn't - I just slept on it). There were some other things I wanted done hoping to make this my last bed. Colton said they'd add more padding because it will sink slightly over time. If there were issues, because they made it, it could be adjusted. It obviously was not a pillowtop (the pillowtop per many websites wear down prior to the mattress wearing down. That can make you replace the bed sooner than needed and that was why I stayed clear of them for over 20 years - they're comfy at first then they are awful.
Two nice guys delivered the bed on time. It was amazing watching the weight difference especially of the box springs and the bed I had apparently wasn't bad - it was just too firm and it was really obviously a lot lighter than the Colton.
Time will tell if I made the right decision. My neighbor across the street said (when it was delivered) her father bought a bed from Colton a few years earlier and loved it. It's one person's opinion but from her, it carried weight and my trust.
If my bed changes or Colton doesn't deliver on their promise of fixing the bed if there's an issue, this review will be updated.
Colton makes most of the beds they sell without pressure or being concerned about spending less than $1k - the other company was pushing me to purchase what I clearly didn't want and to pay more. The other joint also carried brands from known companies. The companies are worlds apart. The only "wish" I have is that Colton would carry more of a selection.
