About us

$75/ hour expert high level gardening (NO MOWING). I treat every yard as a botanic garden. Meaning I can ID 95% of the plants found in the common landscape and know how to properly train/treat. Get as much done as 2 or 3 average gardeners. Weeding- pull out most noxious 1st (burnweed, poke weed, bittersweet etc) Pruning - cutting 1/3 oldest wood back, no hedging (shaping with technique); timing to promote flowers Planting - install at proper depth with nutritious growing media Irrigation - proficiently install drip line Fertilization- annuals (weekly microdose) ; perennials, shrubs and trees (yearly slow release) I am a degreed (Rutgers University) horticulturist with 10+ years of botanic garden experience: Telluride Ski Resort, Virgin Island Villas, Nestldown (wedding venue) and Rockefeller Estates. Derek is very knowledgeable and easy to work with. He had a real passion for plants and making sure we work with our native habitat. He really works with you and your budget. He comes up with ideas to make it your own. I love his plant placement. He also helped me think about each season and the future when choosing plants. We still have a lot of work a head of us but looking forward to the end result and a few years of growth!

Working with Derek is such a gift. He goes above and beyond to ensure you are satisfied with his creations while answering any questions thoroughly and professionally. I was not sure which plants would succeed in my mostly shady yard, so he really took the reins in both making the choices and educating me throughout the process. He is passionate about native plants and a great teacher. I highly recommend him!

I hired Derek for general landscape work like pruning and weeding. He is great at that. Then I started using him to improve the landscape in a small part of the yard by creating a meadow-type area. It will take several years until it matures, but he has made a great start. He designed, installed a rock “river” and planted all the flowers. He’s also planted a bunch of bulbs. They are just starting to reach out of the soil. I can’t wait for spring to see how it all looks!

Derek is wonderful! We've been working together for about 9 months to redesign our yard to make more sense with the lighting, using local plants. He know his stuff too! During winter he's been clearing our yard of ivy and kicking some major ypu-know-what! He's honest, knowledgeable and so great to work with!

Derek with Apres Horticulture has done some landscaping for me and several neighbors. What I like is that he’s willing to work a few hours a week and I can pay as I go. He not only installed landscaping, he designed it. (Only one choice above) He’s very knowledgeable, a “plant nerd”. Very personable and has a great work ethic. He’s a hard worker. I like that he favors native plants. I can’t upload photos because Helene wiped out what we had done. We’ll start all over and Derek will help us come up with a plan. We’re down to bare dirt in our front yard and he can’t wait to get started.
