When we were going into this backyard project we had no idea what to expect or what we needed to know and how to do it. Upon contacting Pete and meeting his team he was able to give me a plethora of options for our backyard. From his expertise on town codes and structural safety to his teams professionalism and beautiful craft we could not be happier. Standard construction took our backyard from a patchy clay mess and turned into a vacation spot we visit daily. And the best part was that all I had to do was provide Pete with a vision and his creativity took off and created something I would have never imagined. I have known the "Standard Construction & Landscaping Inc" owners, Peter and Heather, for a long time. They are very sincere and caring people toward their customers and toward the projects they do. Their wisdom, experience, trust worthiness, commitment and leadership is bar none the best you will ever get, no one else compares. I am fortunate to have them perform many different major Hardscaping, landscaping, Patio, Fencing, and SOD projects for me and extremely happy with the outcome. We love our new patio and we are getting lots of compliments from neighbors and friends saying it looks like a page out of Southern Living magazine. Standard Construction took us to projects they had already completed and projects they were working on so that we could see the beauty of their. They even met with us on Saturday to show us their work.

Standard Contruction & Landscaping is by far the worst company I have experienced in 25-years of home ownership and 50+ in-home service providers. The owner presented himself as flexible and professional upfront, but that evaporated shortly after signing contract and making initial payments. Then I found them unreliable, disorganized, unresponsive, and unethical. The finish project (100k) was average at best and not what I was promised or agreed to. I kept getting steered away from the materials that I actually wanted to his preferred products, which a suspect were more discounted to him. I only capitulated fearing the job would be abandoned by him (as I had paid 10-20% ahead) and I just wanted to end the relationship. Due to empirical and observable over charges, which were to be negotiated towards end of project, I refused to pay the last few thousand of dollars, as I was overcharged by several times that amount. Lastly, I found that the owner was particularly resistant to accept any responsibility for his mistakes and poor communication skills, which lead to early problems, that snowballed. There are too many other quality landscapers out there; so, I suggest to steer clear of this company.

Generally it went well. The end product is lovely and we are quite happy. The construction team was very good - worked hard, very personable. My issues are around the lack of communication throughout the project and lack of clean up at the end. Both of these things are easy to fix and should be addressed.

He was terrible about returning phone calls and coming for scheduled appointments and visits. He constantly ran late but asks for payment in advance. He would say that they run into some delays and they can’t just possibly do it unless I can pay a little bit in good faith forward and then he would disappear for months at a time. He was the one who built the retaining walls which he designed and built them and they were not designed well and was not functional. He claimed to be an expert in water flow and drainage but we actually ended up with water flowing toward the house and into our swimming pool as opposed to away from the house and away from the pool. So the retaining walls were poorly designed, built wrong and not effective. The grading and sloping was all wrong. The sprinkler system didn’t work. He listed himself as a general contractor and he said that he would subcontract somebody to fix our irrigation well. We paid him in advance so that he would then use that money to pay the well person and if it underpays it, we would pay him more. If it overpaid that he would pay us the difference but basically he then turned around and hired a friend. He did not use the well company and they basically just cut the pipe and dropped it to the bottom of the well and try to cram a new pipe in on top of it instead of pulling it and replacing the pump. So it basically made the whole well malfunction. So I then had to go back and hire a different well person to actually pull all that back out of the well and put in a new pump and pipes and everything. So what should have been a few hundred dollars job ended up costing me about $8,000 to undo and repair the damage that he and his subcontractor did. He gives a really good price I think to suck her people in to get the business. He was just really horrible. I would never use him again.

The project went very smoothly. Changes were made midstream of the project by us, the homeowners, and his company was happy to make the adjustments per our request.
