Hair Salons/Barbers
I just moved and needed a haircut.
I gave the stylist basic instructions on how my hair was cut before. For example, "my former stylist blow-dried and flat-ironed my bangs before she cut them because I have a slight cowlick and it shows how they'll lay.'
The stylist then proceeded to say it would be fine and cut my bangs wet. I wasn't sure to say 'stop' because I trusted her as a stylist to have the expertise that it would look
I said I wanted a few face framing layers and that my former stylist used scissors in a downward cut to leave a few long face framing layers.
This stylist proceeded to cut upward snipping the hair very short. I reminded her how it was done again and she said there were different ways to achieve the look and continued to cut. I was getting more upset as she snipped the hair and closed my eyes. When I opened them there were short layers all the way to the bangs.
She finally said 'I see you're upset' and I said 'yes, I did not want that short layering up to my bangs.' I looked like I had a mom haircut from 1995. I waited to see how it would look styled, crossing my fingers it would look differently and be fine as it is often the case.
I also said I wanted my hair to be one length all around. She ended up cutting it shorter in the front , longer in the back. Don't even get me started on how she had no idea how to properly blow-dry (had similar issue at a Regis Salon location in Carbondale IL) or straighten hair and left my hair a frizz bomb. She hadn't even used conditioner when washing my hair.
The bangs were too long. I just tried to pull off the apron thing and get out of there.
She said I should never ask for 'face framing layers,' because, to her, there is only one way to create them, which is very short up to the bangs and that I didn't communicate well. Um, I think I've been pretty successful at describing what I want with past stylists who were able to translate my descriptions and use their education to cut hair properly.
People go to stylists because they know how to take a client's idea and have the skills and expertise to translate it into a hairstyle.
She also took way too long to cut an inch of hair. The issue at these salons is they also have to wait on customers buying products while cutting because there are only two people working.
My story ends that I ended up going to a stylist at another salon. She was able to look at my hair (by the way was unevenly cut) and describe different ways she could fix it. And she did. It's shorter than I wanted, but it's salvaged.
Stylists are a very important. They can be a part of making a woman feel confident and beautiful. That's why bad haircuts are horror stories. Hair grows back, but not overnight.
