It was a complete waste of time and money to have these guys out to troubleshoot an intermittent start problem I was having on my gas furnace. They did ZERO actual troubleshooting, just eyeballed the start sequence, cleaned the flame sensor, watched 3 start cycles, and decided the problem was fixed. Apparently they didn't grasp the concept that "intermittent" means sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. The exact same problem recurred within an hour of their service call.
When I contacted them to report that the same problem was still present I at least expected to be offered an apology and a free return visit to check it out further. Instead, I was informed that I would be charged for another service call for them to come back. Further, they made it pretty clear that their game plan was just going to be replacing the next part that they suspected might be bad (control valve). Needless to say, I declined. If I'm going to pay professional rates I expect some diagnostic expertise to determine exactly what is wrong. Parts swapping I can do myself!
I was trying to save some time & effort by having them come out, but ultimately I bit the bullet and did what I should have done in the first place: Dragged out my manuals & meters and did my own troubleshooting. It took me awhile, but I was able to narrow the problem down to a bad control board. I ordered one online (for half what they would have charged me), popped it in, and the furnace has been running smoothly ever since.
Based on my experience, I would avoid American Sheet Metal if you have any furnace problems more complex than changing a filter. They will certainly never touch another piece of my equipment.
