You have several other options when choosing gutters beyond faux copper made from vinyl, aluminum, or galvanized steel. You can also install real copper gutters, zinc gutters, wooden gutters, or vinyl, aluminum, or steel gutters that don't mimic the appearance of faux copper. The term "gutters" actually refers to a full system of pieces that help to keep aluminum gutters in place. The other parts needed when installing gutters include end caps, hangers, fasteners, end caps, and downspouts. For most homes, it's necessary to space downspouts every 30 to 40 feet.

These two gutter material options are strong choices for your home, but there are a few key differences. Galvanized steel gutters are less expensive than aluminum gutters (usually $4 to $8 per linear foot) and are very durable—often proving sturdy even against falling tree branches. Galvanized steel, however, is prone to rust, while aluminum never rusts. If you need a more durable option, consider getting quotes for copper gutters cost or faux copper gutters cost.

If you’re not interested in digging up your yard, but you still need to direct water away from your house, another option is to extend your downspouts further out into the yard. Two methods to do this are:

  • Adding a splashguard. This is the simplest method. You can purchase a splashguard at your local hardware store and place it under your downspout. This will act as a funnel to direct water away from your house.

  • Add downspout extension at the end. You can also add an additional downspout to the end of the “elbow” as a way to extend the water further out into your yard. Some hardware stores sell downspouts with a flexible extension that you can maneuver around your yard.

The above alternatives are great options if your gutters are above a slab foundation that you wouldn’t want to dig up. One downside to these methods is if your yard slopes back upwards to your home, then the water won’t actually flow away. In which case, burying your downspouts if the best option to avoid flooding and water damage to your home.
