I had several wood working projects to do throughout the house but when I found out Mr. Fortin's rate was $40 per hour I had to re-think what I could hire him for and the following day let him know I would only be hiring him to do the kitchens lower cabinets which need to be shaved and shimmed due to a 1.5" slope in my floor and install the pre-made counter tops on the cabinets. What was to be a 3 day job he slopped together in just over 12 hours. I was shocked and very unhappy with the sloppy work. Mr. Fortin still wanted a full $960 which is what he gave me as an estimate (3 8hr days at $40 per hour = $960). We settled at $620 but the work was so bad I was calling him the next day pleading for a fix to the horridly uneven seams at the 45's of the counters and the gapping seam he left due to a bad cut job and trying to use angled screws to mitr the joints. He told me I was supposed to have purchased a special Filler when I got the counter tops (Lowe's denies this and says the filler is a Special Oder for Mistakes). He also said the seams could easily be fixed by readjusting but yet swore they were Glued !! In addition I found that he had mounted wood strips to my walls behind the corners of the cabinets, clearly they were supposed to be Supports. However my counters just Hover above them a half to a full inch. The counter tops do not touch the supports whatsoever. Mr. Fortin will not acknowledge this when asked Why he put them in, he completely Ignores the question. I thought we were to a point that Mr. Forin was going to come Fix his work but he called me back saying he was bringing someone with him and mentioned weapons. I was shocked and scared and told him he was not to come on my property at that point. Mr. Fortin would not shake my hand, claimed that because he was a "Licensed contractor" I would get a Professional Invoice (I did not, I got an email in paragraph format that isn't itemized) and made some very condescending comments that had me on guard from the very beginning. I realize now that I should have went with my gut feelings about this man but his words convinced me that he was a Professional and worth the exorbitant rate he was charging. I do have the counter tops fixed now. No way to fix the cabinets that he simply put on scrap blocks of wood without having to pay to re-do it all completely. The man that fixed the counter tops did a Fantastic job and I will be rating him next. With the fix job going so well I know that the counters should have been done this way to begin with. Mr. Fortin's last words to me on the phone were " I stand by my work ". He clearly did not not stand by his work. I've had A Lot of bad experiences with Montana contractors in the past 3 years ... This is the First time I've felt the service, work and person was so bad that I had to warn others.
