The contractor "sold" me on his transparent billing, the cleanliness of his employees and quality of work. While I'm very happy with the skylights themselves, this was the worst experience I've had with a contractor.
He didn't offer me "options" when quoting, so when I requested a change (I didn't want trim around the skylights), he charged me a "change" fee. His quote stated they would paint, but it turned out it only included painting the inside of the skylights, and he didn't even do paint matching so I had to re-paint my entire ceiling anyway. I'd had skylights installed at a previous home, and the workers built themselves a little "plastic enclosure" to work around before cutting into the ceiling, and it cut down the dust TREMENDOUSLY. This contractor did not do that and I had dust on everything -- even on my electronic devices in rooms that were completely closed off. I ended up building one of these enclosures myself for another room, and it helped a lot in keeping the dust contained.
His workers broke an old teacup set that was given to me from my Grandmother. I didn't know what it was worth, but the contractor credited me just $25 for it (but then charged me the "change order fee" of $50, so it didn't feel like a credit at all).
He told me that he would be providing me with ALL receipts for everything he purchased on my behalf. The only receipt I received was for paint. When I followed up, he wrot e back stating he wasn't sure if he had the receipts anymore, and asked which ones I wanted. I told him I wanted ALL receipts, as he originally said I would get. I never heard back.
The job was supposed to take a couple weeks, but it took about 6 weeks.
