The order process was easy, friendly. My feelings were very good towards our salesperson at the time were excellent, he was very knowledgeable in his recommendations, even offering that when they put the new door in, they could do something to fix a sagging door in the back of the house.
I ordered the door on January 9th, 2014. At that time, I had (still have) an email from our salesperson saying it would take 2 weeks to get the door in, and probably two more weeks to get it installed. -
fast forward to the week of March 3rd. (does this sound like 4 weeks to you?). We finally got a call that the doors were in, and they wanted to install them on the 11th. My wife and I both took time from work to be there during the install.
I have nothing but kudos and good words about our install team - Chris and Anthony were the epitome of professionalism. I knew putting a new door in was not likely to be easy - and it wasn't, but their knowledge, patience and above all (what I appreciate the most) is their attention to detail and not allowing anything to slip by. This was evident in several ways - one example was ensuring that the rock covering we have stayed in tact by applying copies amounts of liquid nails and ensuring it stayed put. Another example was evidenced by them actually installing the entire door, only to find out that it was "pretty close" to the entry inside. They demoed the entire door, and applied the necessary elements to ensure there was no chance that the loose vinyl in our entry way bound on our door. Like I indicated I have nothing but good to say about them.
When the installation folks arrived on the 11th, they informed me that the storm door did not come in, so that would take another appointment. It is now the 19th of March (I'll let you count the number of weeks) and during the entire time, I did not hear one solitary word about our door, delays, status on anything or really anything that could be confused with customer service from our salesperson.
So far I am very very satisfied with the quality of the door, and the quality of the workmanship in installation is the best I've seen. I wish that I could rate the installation part separate from the sales and customer service part, because that would get A across the board, with the customer service portion getting nothing but F's.
Bottom line - these people do have a good quality product I believe, and their installation personnel are through, knowledgeable and professional. Their customer service - simply keeping the customer informed however needs a lot of work. If you can see past that, I'd go with these folks, otherwise, we have other items that need replaced, and we will likely go with Lynrich (which by the way when I got the estimate were up front and told me it would be at the 12 week mark before we could really expect installation).
I'll be calling to find out where my storm door is later today.
This is a hard review to write because the first part of our experience went very well. The company did an excellent job of installing the door. The quality of the material and the paint color was exactly what we expected.
The problem came when we discovered that the "THERMA-TRU" company had etched their logo in the lower left hand corner of the right door. This glass was in the upper 1/4 of the door. The logo was right at eye height where one looked out the door. It was large and became luminous whenever the sunlight shown on it. It was over the center lock and across from the hinges. We had ordered a clear glass window and instead we had a commercial logo placed where it was visually intrusive and was clearly not acceptable! I discovered that THERMA-TRU's logo is much larger and more luminous that other door manufacturers logos. Many of the premium brands do NOT show their logo on the window. They only show the required Glass Temper Blaze in thin light letters that are almost invisible.
THERMA-TRU's Door System Genuine Component Part Identification Guide clearly shows the logo should have been placed next to the hinges and across from the lock. That would have made the logo acceptable and non-intrusive. It was very clear to us that this was a nonconformity in workmanship and the door should have been replaced with one that met their own specifications.
This would have been very costly to replace. So, we proposed a discounted solution to WIN-DOR. One where we would have paid what we could have gotten for a similar door from another company. We made phone calls, sent e-mails, made a personal visit and then sent several letters to the President of the Company. We received no response until we got a letter from their lawyer stating they would file a lawsuit unless we paid the full amount within 10 days. There was no effort to offer any other solution.
I asked for a meeting with WIN-DOR and their lawyer. They decided instead to have a meeting with several of their staff, and a representative from THERMA-TRU and myself.
I presented my case. The THERMA-TRU representative stated that they always did it that way and could not change their manufacturing process. It did not make any difference what was best for the customer. Besides, they had not had any other complaints. WIN-DOR made no attempt to resolve the situation between the three parties at that meeting. It appeared that whatever THERMA-TRU says is what will happen.
The President of WIN-DOR then stated he was going to take me to court unless I paid the balance of the contract. It became evident that there was not going to be any effort to reach an accommodation. I terminated the meeting at that time.
He then threatened to take me to court if I "Bad Mouthed" him on Angie's List. I payed the rest of the invoice.
This is not an attempt to "Bad Mouth" WIN-DOR or THERMA-TRU. This is an accurate and true account of our experience.
If you want a quality job for a high premium on a standard door that does not have any special concerns, by all means they would be a good choice. If you select a THERMA-TRU door make sure you see an exact copy of the type of door you want. Make sure the THRMA-TRU logo will not be visually intrusive. I do not recommend ordering a double door that needs to be customized for a special situation where the glass is in the upper 1/4 of the door.
I am suspect of the WIN-DOR Warranty shown on their web page that says; "We always strive for 100% customer satisfaction. And, that is our promise. We’re not happy, until you’re happy!"
My experience has shown that they will only try to make you happy if they have a simple problem that can be easily fixed. It appears that if you have a difficult situation and you are not happy and you do not pay the remainder of your invoice until you are happy, they will not make a sincere effort to resolve the situation. Instead they will initiate proceedings for a lawsuit.
