I answered an personal ad on a local garage-sale site. This young man works by himself, trying to get business up and running as a self-employed roofer. He beat me to the two sites I needed inspected! I was on time, he was early. We had a pretty good hail storm, and I needed to know if two rental's roofs were okay. He stated they were, but a small garden shed at one site would not last through another storm. I agreed, asked him when he could do it, and could he approximate a cost. Said he could do it that day, for about $150 in labor. I would need to accompany him to the local home improvement store, choose which shingles I wanted, buy the underlay of roof felt and the nails that would be needed, and he could start right away. The only down side was that he had no shingle samples for me to look at, and he does not have an account with the home improvement store. So, I couldn't choose, have him buy the supplies, and start the job without me accompanying him to the store. We arranged for removal of the old shingles, and he hauled them to the dump. The tear-off and installation of new roof was $125, plus the cost of nails, felt, and shingles. The disposal was $25. It necessitated trips to two home improvement stores, since neither one had all supplies needed. So an extra 1 1/2 hours added to my day. But, the finished roof looks good, and I have a written guarantee for his work for two years. All in all, not bad. I had an insurance adjuster come to look at the property in it's entirety, as a result, he naturally got on the roof. The roof that the original person said was "just fine" is actually bad enough to need replacing. The original person from Shamrock Roofing had roofing nails ( 2/3 of the box ) left over. Since it was not a nail my husband could use, I asked Shamrock if he was interested in buying the rest of the box, since I had paid for them in the first place. He said he would, but it took four reminders, about a week apart, before I finally got the money. He had the nails the whole time. Had taken them without the deal having been made.
