and quot;The Search For the Best Vetand quot;
By Elizabeth Severn-Eriksson
When we first moved to Montana after graduating from college quite a few (ok, 20) years ago, we came with our first children, our
dog Taylor and cat Frankie. I'd grown up with quite a few animals, but these were the first in my and quot;adult'' life that I was completely responsible for, and they were our babies.
After settling in, I began looking for a vet. I looked in the phone book, asked around for recommendations, and made an appointment to take Taylor in for one of her puppy shots. Inevitably I was disappointed . Whatand shy; ever I was looking for, I was having a hard time finding. I'm not sure I could ever really pinpoint my dissatisfaction at that time. Looking back, it had everything to do with bedside manner. I could not have cared less about my own doctor, but my animals' doctor was of vital importance. I know
there are many vets in Bozeman, and I am sure most of them are very good. But the one I chose for my animals had to love them, had to know their names and had to be compassionate.
My relentless search through the Bozeman area came to a screeching halt one fall day when I took them in to see Dr. Hardaway. He was the one, the man I would go to for the next 20 some years, who would see me through seven cats, one pig, six dogs and many barn animals. And 20 years later, I still have so much respect for that man.
Most people know how bedside manner and comand shy; passion are often found desperately lacking in the mediand shy;cal field. One bad experience can haunt you for a lifeand shy; time. We once had a kitten who lived only a few months, his body wasted away from feline leukemia. Because of his profound sweetness and lovingness, making the decision of when to put him to sleep even more
difficult. We took him to a different vet in the absence of Dr. Hardaway, desperately looking for a compassionate answer. The temporary vet, though probably totally comand shy;petent , was unsmiling and lacking in any warmth and compassion , and made the entire process of putting the kitten to sleep even more heart wrenching . The experience will never be forgotten.
I realize everyone has their own favorite vet and for their own reasons. I, however, know I have found the very finest and already I
dread the day when he decides to trade his stethoscope and long hours in for the relaxation and carefree days of retirement.
We recently put our sickly 11-year old-mini dachsand shy;hund to sleep. He had been a healthy guy for the first few years of his life until he contracted an autoimmune disease. He had been on steroids and other medicines that had also taken a toll on his little body over the years, and then his pancreas stopped working. Still we hung in there, telling ourselves he was still happy, still had quality to his life. And then he got sick in January and didn't get better.
A few days after he contracted this most recent illness, I took him to Dr. Hardaway to see what he thought. I did not leave his office with Stanley. Our vet was incredible . He told me what I needed to hear with compassion and directness. As much as you never want to put any monetary value on an animals' life, I wanted to know what this vet bill would cost to run all the diagnostic tests and attempt to fix this latest travesty, and yet didn't quite know how to ask.
And with a compassionate honesty that can't be easy, Dr. H pointed out that a few hundred dollars spent diagnosing him might only return him to his condition before this latest sickness, and asked me honestly, though with sensitivity, what that quality was.
It wasn't an easy answer, and I couldn't make it on my own. I called my husband, and in tears, told him he had to make the decision . And then I went back into the office, and held my sickly dog in my arms as my vet peacefully ended his suffering. The office handled my grief so well too, offering to bill me so I could leave fast, and gently asking how I wanted to handle the burial options.
We also received the most caring heartfelt card from his entire office that following week. What a difficult job, one that requires the knowledge and expertise necessary to be proficient in animal health and medicine, but also an entirely different set of skills required to relate to the owners of beloved pets . He offered sensitivity, tact, and so much compassion.
In many aspects I am sure being a vet is very rewarding with all the amazing medicines and diagnostic tests and methods of fixing illnesses that used to end animals' lives much sooner. But it also requires honesty, love, patience and lots of tactfulness. It's a job that requires a very special person . And I will be forever grateful that I held out in my search for the best vet, and eventually
found him. In the end the very best vet knows, as Dr. Hardaway learned long ago, that you must tread softly on the hearts of those who love their animals.
