After reading an article about proper duct cleaning on allergystore.com, I called a few local companies that were NADCA certified.  I got a quote from the owner, who seemed very knowledgeable.  He gave me a quote of $900 to clean all duct work, the unit and apply encapsulate to prevent future mold problems. (We had recently noticed a musty smell when the air came on.) They scheduled my job the very same week.   The men who came out were very professional and arrived on time.  They did all the work in about 2 hours and cleaned up well.  The bill was exactly what we had been quoted.  One thing that really impressed me was that I had been given a quote on cleaning my air unit by the company who did maintenance on the unit.  They quoted a much higher price for the unit (not including the duct work) and wanted to sell me a very expensive UV light to target mold and mildew in the unit.  I asked the owner what he thought about the UV lights and he explained to me how they worked, and that it would only prevent mold and mildew, and not do anything about the dust.  He said the UV lights cost about $300 per year to maintain, and he recommended just having the unit cleaned yearly for half that amount.  I appreciated his honesty.
