"Appointment set immediately. They gave arrival time for very next day and arrived on time. Polite, consciencence and knowledgeable! Six led can lights and three led overhead strip shop lights completed in only a few hours. I would highly recommend Self-Electric for all electrical work. LC"

"We needed central heating and air installed in a 68-year-old home that previously had gas heat and window units. We love the 5-ton system Dennis Barlow installed. He and his technicians are very professional and easy to work with. They made it easy to understand the process and worked well with our schedule. We highly recommend Lakeland HVAC to anyone looking for great pricing and great service."

"I had an issue with my computer where it was opening lots of pop ups, ad bars, and windows with ads for games. I had tried several different programs to try to remove it with no luck. I finally decided to call North Alabama Technical Service to see if I he could help. I was expecting to set up a time for him to look at it but he connected to my computer immediately and within an hour had it fixed and running perfect again. Great service at a great price and I didn't even have to disconnect it and carry it somewhere! Would call again if I have another issue I can't resolve myself."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Yes, you should turn off your AC if it’s leaking. Turning off the system prevents more condensation from leaking and reduces strain on the unit if a damaged internal component or lack of refrigerant is the cause. While this may temporarily stop the leak, water can continue to drip from a thawing coil even after the system is off. As soon as you notice a leak, turn off the unit and investigate the source or call a professional for an inspection.

One of the fastest ways to unfreeze an AC unit is to turn off the unit and, if it’s warm outside, use the fan-only mode to help blow warmer air through the unit to speed up the defrosting process. While it may be tempting to use a hair dryer to defrost the air conditioner, that high heat can damage the coils.

After defrosting, if you can safely solve the issue with a fix like changing the filter, go ahead and do so. Otherwise, call in a pro before turning your AC back on.

A blockage in the ductwork may prevent air from flowing through the vent. If some rooms in your home are very hot or cold and another isn't, that can be a sign that a vent is blocked. Another sign of a blockage is a buildup of dirt or dust around the vent. In either case, a duct installer or cleaning service can investigate the issue for you and recommend a course of action.

Mold in your air conditioner isn't a good thing, as it can be harmful to your health. If the mold travels through the ductwork or is blown out of the A/C, you and your family can inhale mold spores and develop respiratory illnesses and other problems. Preventing mold from growing in the air conditioner will help protect your health.

The average life span of an HVAC system is 15 to 20 years. Even if your old air conditioner is still functional, it isn't as energy-efficient as a newer system (especially one with an Energy Star designation). Older HVAC systems aren't as efficient, and the 10-year mark is when you should start making full system replacement plans. Twenty years in, that plan should be well underway rather than waiting for the unit to die.
