Tec Air Heating and Cooling, Wentzville, MO. They merged when the relatives of one of the two companies retired. But Tec Air is not listed on Angie's List so I'm leaving a review for Johnson Heating and Cooling.
At any rate, I called and spoke with Tracy (one of the owners). I explained the problem with my air conditioner and that I wanted to get an estimate. She said she would send a technician over the next morning.
The next day, Tracy dispatched Nathan to visit me for an evaluation/estimate. She called me 20 minutes beforehand to confirm my address and to let me know he was on his way.
Nathan arrived right on time and is very, very people oriented. He does not speak "geek" though he has 14 years experience in the HVAC field. (I think he missed his calling; he could easily be an HVAC instructor.)
I explained 2 things:
1) I am between jobs and can't afford to have everything replaced. If he could explain to me what it is I'd need to do, I could determine if I was up to the task. (I'm a seasoned computer tech but electronics and household wiring are not my strong suit.)
2) I gave him a blow-by-blow account of what happened when my a/c went out and the steps I took to troubleshoot and resolve it. (Tip: Always make sure to give a clear description of what happened, starting at the beginning. Don't just say, "It stopped working." Give the context of what happened at the time.)
Nathan understood my situation, listened to my evaluation, and proceeded to explain what had happened and what was needed to make the necessary repairs. He felt I had the ability and understanding to make it happen. But if I didn't feel comfortable taking the DIY approach, he'd be more than happy to do the work himself. The choice was mine. No pressure.
He estimated that it would probably cost just under $1,000 for him to do the repair. And that it came with a 30 day warrant (I believe.) And that the motor alone might cost a bit over $100 if I purchased it myself.
I felt I could do the job but I did have a handful of questions as I didn't want to jump into this and find that I was wasting my time and money. He answered all my questions and asked if I had any other questions before he left. He answered all my questions and concerns and gave me some verbal instructions on some of the wiring which was very helpful. (I took lots of notes.) He wasn't in any hurry to dash off for the next appt. Very patient!
I asked if there was an HVAC supply house nearby and he recommended Schepker Parts Supply (who in turn recommended S C Electric).
After he left, I started dismantling the blower and circuit breaker. I made sure to take plenty of photos (which proved to be very helpful). I wrote down where all the wires went and used a labeling machine to label some of the wires. I went parts shopping and got everything I needed.
So what did I get for my $85?
It was more than an estimate/evaluation. It was an educational consultation which gave me the knowledge and confidence to do the job myself. If this would've been over my head then I would've bit the bullet and had them do the work. I would suggest the same for anyone else.
I don't know if all of Johnson's HVAC techs are as good as Nathan but I would venture to say that the owners know a good tech when they see one. Tracy herself is also a class act!
