This work was for my parents. It was initiated when they changed insurance companies and the new company would not cover the roof on their house until some repairs were completed. After assessing options, it was decided it would be better to over-shingle the roof than to simply do repairs. Two contractors were contacted ... one that had a good Angie's list rating and this one that had been used by my brother-in-law. At first I contacted this contractor by getting his main phone number from the internet. I left several messages and did not get a return call. I then was about to give up on him when I believe he was contacted by my sister via his cell phone and he called me. We made an appointment and he met me on time at my parents. He had good literature with him that described the products he intended to use that helped us in our decision. His estimate form was not as formal and did not contain all the legal forms that were provided with the other contractor's estimate.
When I reviewed the estimates with my dad and since his bid was for $300 less than the other contractor for exactly the same materials, we decided this would be the best deal. I contacted Rick and let him know he had the job. I asked if he needed anything like a contract or down-payment to get started and he said he was willing to accept our conversation as a verbal contract.
The materials were delivered on Friday and Monday morning they started work. I decided I would meet the workers at my parents house and do other work around the house while the roofing work was performed. I was told to plan on them starting work at 7AM so I was there at that time and considering it is a one hour drive for me ... that meant I had to get up earlier than I normally would have. At 8AM they had not show up yet so I called Rick. He explained they had to pick up some equipment and would arrive in about 30 minutes which they did. They quickly set up and got started. My mom is normally very sensitive to noise and we were both amazed that there was not a lot of noise filtering down into the house so that made me happy. The first day they completed most of the work and wrapped up when the heat made the singles soft. They said they didn't want to cause any damage walking on them and quit about 2PM. They cleaned up everything before they left. I asked what time they would show up the next day and was told 8AM.
Tuesday I was there at 8AM but the workers were not there yet .. but the first one showed up within about 5 minutes after and immediately got to work setting everything up again. By the time he completed the setup, the others were there. They wrapped up their work and cleaned up around the house again. Normally I've had roofers leave an open bundle of shingles in case a later repair might be necessary and I asked them about leaving some and was told it would never be necessary because of the quality of this shingle. When I had my roof replaced, I had actually purchased a higher quality shingle as the roofer voluntarily left me with what was left from an open bundle. It may be just a security thing and may never be needed, but I believe it is a good gesture.
Overall, I am very pleased with this contractor. I appreciated being able to do things on a verbal handshake versus all of the threat of leans and legal paperwork that is typically required. Rick came to the house after his workers had left to ensure we were satisfied and to get a check for the work. The workers were all local people who spoke English. Neither my parents or I remember hearing any foul language so I really appreciated that. In addition, all of them were polite and respectful. I would use this contractor again in the future.
