This will be my final review. I'm done updating after this, if you still go with this company you have been warned. I'm going to use my calendar and text messages to make this as accurate as possible.
For the estimate Mark (sales man) came over 3/26/2015 and took measurements, discussed things and said he wanted to come back with more subcontractors. He came back with Helitec, an electrician #1, a project manager Allen and a contractor. They walked through discussed options. We were told we'd get the estimate/proposal by the end of the week. 2 weeks later Mark came out again but instead of the estimate he wanted to discuss the options again. 4/27/15 we got our estimate/proposal and signed the same day with 1/3 down (they were the cheapest option that didn't require us to do a bunch of the work ourselves and maneuver a bunch of different service providers). They told us the work would be done easily by 7/31/15. I asked Mark about additional expenses and he said there wouldn't be many. Mark brought to us a written contract in paragraph form that outlined most of the work to be done and didn't seem concerned about spelling out the particulars (see bottom paragraph for why that may be important).
Our appointment with Helitec was pushed out 8+ weeks instead of the original 4-6 due to all of the delays. We tried to contact the project manager and after calls to him and after calls to the office we found out our projector manager Allen quit, we now had Bob 5/27/15. 5/30/15 we moved everything out of the basement in preparation of them coming to demo our basement.
We were told that Helitec would begin working one day but they didn't show up until the next day, supposed poor communication between our project manager and Helitc. 7/1/15 Helitec was working on the house and we found out that the cost would be $550 more to seal an additional crack and re-route our washing machine to empty into the sewer pipe. 7/9/15 We noticed that due the drain from the sump pump was making our neighbor's driveway into a small pond and asked it to be corrected.
7/8/15 We sent pictures of the molding we wanted per Bob's request a waterproof composite for the baseboard from Home Depot A21. I have just checked and that is not what they installed. I can tell because the waterproof composite if not made of wood per the picture we sent of the shelf tag. It priced at $1.47.
We found out that our electrician was MIA so a new electrician (Building Systems Tech LLC) wanted to come out and look over the project to submit a bid to FM Exteriors. 7/13/15 We learned that the new electrician wanted to put in a new panel and hard-wired smoke detectors, then we didn't need it, then 7/17/15 we did ($2200 more than original bid). 7/16/15 the electricians took our house key home and brought it back, Then a day later it disappeared for 2 nights, said they didn't have it and that it was put under a bucket which it wasn't, then it appeared on top of rocks in the bucket after the brother of one of the electricians came over and was in our home without our previous knowledge. (we bought new locks and changed them ourselves) The electrical work was completed in the first 2 weeks of 8/2015. (outlets, can lights, electrical box in basement, 1 can light and hardwired smoke detectors upstairs)
The first drywallers they had out spent about a week (half days each day) hanging the dry wall and were supposed to tape and mud it. They didn't show up on the weekend that they were supposed to mud. Turns out they don't tape/mud. According to Bob they were fired due to misrepresenting themselves and the electrician had some guys who were going to mud for us. There were several false starts before they finished the mudding where we were told that someone would be at the house only o be told that they wouldn't be showing or to have them just no show with no word from anyone When they began working they were using our garden hose to clean up in the back yard and we'd have to deal with them not connecting it to the sprinkler for our garden and them busting the hose by leaving the water on but the nozzle off (it burst). They did replace the hose. The walls are up and mostly mudded. There's some edges that they missed including where the ceiling meets a beam, where the ceiling meets a window that we had to specifically ask them to do.
At some point in here they verbally guaranteed the work would be done by 8/14/15. 8/13/15 we were told they would be done by Friday. Then 8/15/15 we have a text that they would finish that day. 8/17/15 we were told it would be done the next day.
The flooring arrived 8/11/15, it was picked out in 5/2015. 8/13/15 the floor was installed after a no-call no show. 8/14/15 they dropped off the doors and said they would be back but did not come back or call. My wife was told by Bob 8/18/15 that he needed the majority of the remaining payment and that typically at this point in the project they asked for most of the remaining balance. Our contract said we would pay them when the job was done. She gave them a check that has already cleared, we still owed them about $2000.
8/20/15 John (drywall and construction) showed up 1 hour later than I was told, the work was supposed to be done at this point. It wasn't. I have now been told by Bob that they underbid this project. I disagree with this statement though I can see that if you can't keep good workers it could be more costly.
8/21/15 Bob wants to do a final inspection. Shelves that were supposed to go back as they were before per contract were not reinstalled correctly and had to be fixed. Floor was uneven with the laundry room door. You could see the cement floor from the laundry room because the laminate went diagonally from the front right to the back left of the door frame. A beam in the sealing was still not sealed completely. The shower panel was popping out from the wall. One of the can lights wasn't installed properly. Shower head was leaking, they finally gave us a copy of the receipt for that and we have to exchange it ourselves. We still needed a cover for the outlet in the bathroom which they changed and then told Bob that they didn't because their changing it made it run right into the door frame, meaning the cover needed to be cut to fit the space.
9/4/15 was the inspection and amazingly we passed. We paid the final amount and were told that the warranties would be emailed to us. We still do not have them, despite several attempts to get them. We need warranties for everything--flooring, electric panel, sump pump. According to Helitec, FM Exteriors listed themselves as the homeowners, they asked us when we moved in--we've owned the home for the last 8 years.
Odds and Ends:
They have left trash on our patio and in our yard.
They tried to fill our trash can and recycle can with trash and we had the ask them to remove this.
They routinely no-called/no-showed when they said they would be here including a time when we had my mother watching the house for us specifically to let them in.
Calling Bob often results in no return call or a return text versus a call back.
We often are told one thing (such as someone will be there, it will be done, we're doing it) and it doesn't happen.
They asked us for money before the contract said we had to pay.
When we asked them to put a vent cover over a vent to our furnace that has been made smaller they told us that we had to obtain and install that ourselves because it wasn't spelled out in the contract.
They installed a new light s

Response from FM Exteriors Inc.
"[member name removed], Our team worked very hard, including Sundays, to meet all your requests and went above and beyond our contractual agreement. Numerous face to face conversations with our team and crews led us to believe all questions and concerns were met with satisfaction. We are sorry our services met your needs but not "your" expectations."

I worked through Doug Myers at FM Exteriors. Doug was courteous, professional, and friendly throughout the entire transaction. Doug worked with me on the various options. I never felt pressured to buy anything extra. Because our house was being sold, we had an urgency to complete the roof as soon as possible. Doug worked with his production team to get us on the schedule immediately. The roof was completed only 1 week after my initial contact with FM Exteriors. The roofers did an excellent job. The work was done quickly, quietly (as possible), and neatly. They started early in the morning and were done by early afternoon. I went over to examine the work and found the property just as clean as before they started. Overall, the work was excellent as was our experience. I would definitely do work with FM Exteriors and Doug Myers again. Thanks!!
