I actually chose this company based on reviews here. If you are thinking about them, please look further, and read Facebook reviews as well. Bellhops is not an actual local moving company. They are a portal of sorts that subcontracts out to area moving companies. So, your experience can be COMPLETELY different than other folks, based on who is in your area. We had a very bad experience with Bellhops. First, you have to put a HUGE deposit down, based on six hours, even if you only plan on two. That made me very uncomfortable. And they found a way to stretch it to six hours of time. We were able to negotiate after the move, due to our bad experiences with them, but the money still has to be available in full up front, reserved by a credit card. And their prices are HIGH. The team we had was a mixed batch. One was very professional, courteous and worked hard. He was a gem. One was rude, cussed and complained the entire moving time, had no respect for our possessions, and I wouldn't hire him to walk my dog. The others were neutral, but were not careful with things either. We had several brand new moving boxes busted completely open due to rough handling. My washer has new scratches down the front now that it never had before, and they dropped it off a step hard enough to break the tub stabilizing ring inside. Most of the guys seemed just careless, lets-get-it-done-and-out-of-here. It was very chilly and damp that day, and it seemed no one wanted to be there. They took the back door off at our old place to get things out easier. But they were going to LEAVE without putting the BACK DOOR BACK ON!! When we returned the next day, we found some things had been left out in the yard overnight, and were now soaking wet. We did not have a great crew. We also had several things broken during the short move. We were able to get a token refund towards replacing the items, but that was all. (It did not include the surface damage to things like wood chipped off an antique dresser or the handle broken off a cabinet. I can't replace or fix the dresser, as the wood chips are who-knows-where.) Also, the time frame for making a claim was so short, we were not even able to unpack the majority of our items in time to have anything else included, so we could only claim the visible damage to the larger items. The way things were stacked in our new place, we still cannot get to some of the boxes, and very heavy things were stacked on top of lighter things, which makes it interesting to try to UNpack. We aren't wealthy and didn't have a lot of fancy things, but I did expect them to treat our items as they would their own, and that didn't really happen. We had limited choices in moving companies, and relied on Angie's List reviews to help find a decent one. We didn't have a lot of choices, mainly because of the time frame our complex gave us to move and it was during a holiday week. Perhaps this contributed to the general sour attitude of the moving team, but if this is your job, you work your job on the days you need do it. The one that complained all the time would not even take some of our pieces of furniture, and we ended up having to just discard them due to our tight moving time frame and not enough manpower to get them on the U-Haul we also had to rent AFTER Bellhops (rented because there were so many things left behind). So, that was an additional expense for us, as well as more work on us, after hiring them to do the lifting and moving. Overall, I do not think it is Bellhops themselves as a whole that was the end problem - it was the team they subcontracted out. The customer has no control over that. But, Bellhops needs to SCREEN their people better. I made sure they knew about our experience with each "team member", so they can hopefully note it going forward. I won't name names here, because it would be irrelevant unless you were in our same area. Everyone will have different people, most likely. We had a guy I'd hire for any job I had, and one I would never hire for ANY job. Some of the quote was a little vague to give them wiggle room, which I'll be looking for next time we have to move. I learned a lot during this move. (This is only the second time in our lives we've ever hired a moving company - we've always done it ourselves, but due to age, could not do so this time.) So, your experience with Bellhops can likely vary widely, depending upon your area. What I DID like about Bellhops was the communication from corporate. They did stay in communication with me. Reminders were sent out before the move. Photos were sent of who would be coming on the team, so we knew who to let in the house. The after-move customer care team was outstanding, and patiently listened to my discussion of our experience. The damage reimbursement should have been a little more, in my opinion, but it was not totally unfair - more of a "just-barely" amount. So the Bellhops home offices are doing their jobs well (they are located in Tennessee, as I later learned), but they need to screen the subcontracted team members MUCH better.
