In the first week of April, I called Rosales Masonry to get an estimate for building pillars in my front yard. Two small pillars by my walk, four large pillars on the outside of both entrances to my circle drive, and six intermediate pillars that will act as posts for a cedar fence. This is no small project and the total estimate is approximately $11k. A gentleman named Jorge (aka: George) was to come out for the estimate but never showed up or called. In fact, no one ever called to apologize for missing the appointment, or made any attempt to reschedule. I decided to give Rosales another chance, and arranged for another estimate. A gentleman by the name of “Nacho” (a nickname he asks people to call him) arrived on May 4th (30 minutes late). I was emailed his estimate on or about May 6th where I discovered that 8 of the 12 pillars had the wrong dimensions! I called three times over the next two weeks in order to reiterate what the correct dimensions were to be, but the ladies that work at the front desk remained confused (although this is a very simple concept). I then arranged for a phone call with “Nacho” at 0900, Wednesday the 25th, he called me at 1030. We worked out the correct dimensions, and I received a new estimate by the end of the day. HOWEVER, there was no adjustment in the price as all the wrong dimensions were too big. For example, the original (wrong) estimate had my small columns by the porch at nearly 16 cubic feet of material for $975. These would have been ridiculously huge! The columns are actually to be 5.2 cubic feet of material, less than 1/3 of the total material. Again, this seemed to be a very difficult concept for Rosales to understand, and it took a series of phone calls to get my point across. They finally admitted to making a mistake by forgetting to adjust the price, and recalculated for the correct amount of material. I agreed to accept this new estimate and was told that I would receive a contract via email which I was supposed to sign and return by scan. Two days after that (Friday, June 24th), I received an email stating there were computer problems and that I should just respond to that email for which I did. Monday morning of the 27th, I called Rosales and talked to “Sarah” to confirm they received my email, and to arrange a time to start the two small columns by the porch. She stated that she couldn’t schedule anything right then, but would call me back later that day. At approximately 12:45 that day, my wife called me on the phone to state that two Rosales trucks and three workers were in the front yard laying out material. I had my wife ask them why they were there, and they said they were getting ready to pour the foundations, and were trying to decide where the columns were supposed to go. I had them stop everything and wait for me. I was on the other side of town, had to cancel all that I was doing, leave my work and get back home. To my disgust, I discovered they had all the material to build the enormous (and wrong) 16 cubic feet columns! Even the style of the capstone was wrong as it had a pyramid top even though I told Nacho numerous times I wanted them flat to put planters on. I had them pack everything up at once and leave; I also gave a courtesy call to Rosales to let them know I would not be doing business with them. So, if wife hadn’t have happened to be there, they would have built the wrong thing in the wrong place. This is nothing short of total incompetence! DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH ROSALES MASONRY. I am also filing reports with BBB and with Magic Yellow, and am calling every subcontractor I know to relate what has happened (and get a recommendation for a good mason).
