We performed a large portion of our home-remodeling ourselves, but for the Tile-work, we needed a trustworthy and reliable professional, with extensive experience, whom we could trust to put the finishing touches on our dream bathroom. Mike 'Shoe' Welch was exactly what we needed! He was a wizard with the Tile-work and stayed late on many nights going over the details of the layout, and giving us expert advice on general construction issues for the bathroom remodel and throughout the rest of the house. Shoe and Tim worked cleanly and efficiently to finish our job on time, all while working around our other home-remodeling efforts.
We had several contractors quote our bathroom-tile job, and Shoe's price was very reasonable. He was not dirt-cheap, but was Less than Half of the price of some other big-name Tile guys. What really sold us on M W Construction Services however, was Shoe's ability to understand the full-picture of the bathroom design concept, while also taking personal-stock in our project. He is meticulous in his work, and genuinely cared about the end-result. We trusted Shoe's expertise, and for a fair price, he delivered gorgeous tile work for our bathroom!
Finished product was delivered on-time, as-promised, and we love it !
The owner was very nice and seemed very overwhelmed so we may have just caught them at a bad time. The painter that was sent out also seemed nice but the quality of the painting was quite poor (it may have been 2 different painters since we were only home during part of the job. We were never told about how much of the house would be covered --they just started in on one side window By December 6 we were still communicating about getting the final front window sill done for which we needed to pay for an additional 2 hours of time.
We were sort of surprised that 8 hours of time would only cover the one side window and 3 of the 4 windows on the front of the house-- particularly since only 1 included sanding and prep work while the others were clearly just painted over and since only the outer rims of the windows were done (we did not ask them to remove the storm glass so they did not have to paint around the glass panes. Although we were concerned about the remaining trim on the house, we did not attempt to retain them nor were they eager to provide information about trying to finish. On the final day, I noticed the painter leaving without the ladders--he said the owner would have to come back for them...they sat at our house for quite some time.
Everyone has a bad day so maybe we just got caught up in one
At one point he suggested I take pictures of the affected door so that he could assess what needed to be done without taking away from my 6 hours of labor. That was much appreciated and I'm sure saved at least 1/2 hour. As it was, when Nick came out he was ready to get started.
There were three doors in my home that had various types of weather damage. While Nick was working on the back door, which involved the most work, he sent my boyfriend to the store to get parts we needed to fix the garage door. I also had him look at some areas of wear around the front door that just needed to be sanded and repainted. We were able to find paint that had been used when the house was built to use for that project.
Nick completely replaced the outside of the basement door, repaired the inside rot areas and added caulk to weatherproof around the door as it looked like there might have been some leaking.
He then completely replaced some chair railing around the outside of one of the garage doors and repainted the entire area, and then sanded and repainted the areas of the front door.
He did not take a break for lunch and it was on of the 98 degree days where he was in the full sun all day. He did a fantastic job and only stayed an additional 1/2 hour past our original 6 hours.
His work was high quality, the company clearly is not trying to take advantage of the customer or trying to get extra money out of them, and I will absolutely have them back to help out in other areas of the house.
After my husband examined the door he found a few issues with it. I tried contacting Shoe and did speak with him. We had another contractor come and fix the problem. My husband wanted to talk to him after the fact and left several messages on his voicemail. He never responded. I sent him a text and he did call me and said he hadn't checked his voice mail in months. There's something wrong with that if you are in business. At any rate, the short of it is, he is very unreliable as far as follow up is concerned and I feel that seeing a job through until the end is the biggest part of a job.
The door wasn't installed correctly. End of story.
Original comment:
Shoe responded and came by to talk to me the same day I called! He said obviously this doesn't happen all the time, but he happens to live very close to me.
He spent a lot of time talking with me about all of the work we want to get done. Because we got burnt by a contractor earlier this year, he suggested just doing a small job for us so we could check out his work. I thought that was a great idea!
So he actually worked us in and did the job 2 days after we met. His guys were friendly and professional and they worked hard to do a good job for us.
We love our door and it looks great!
Thumbs up to Shoe, Shane and Dave!
We hope to use them again very soon.
I'd do it again
The tile work started out great and most of the shower looks really good (this was done by the owner). The work done by his workers, well not so great. You can definitely tell a difference in the tile work that different people did the work. The workmanship is not consistent. The paint job on our doors is so bad that we are probably going to have to hire someone to fix them. I would have preferred that they didn't paint the wood work at all if they were going to do that bad of a job.
"1st of all, I won't make any excuses for the amount of time this project took. It was a nightmare for us also. Obviously there is a short term memory issue going on with some exaggeration. This bathroom is by far the nicest room in the house. She failed to mention that the house is over 100 years old. The previous work in this bath looked like a 3 year old did it and when they took a shower it rained in the basement. I told her in the begining that this job may be a huge pain and made me more nervous than any other job I've done in years. They didn't have the demo done that they were suppose to do to save money. We did it! She failed to mention that I gave her a credit of $400! She failed to mention that when we pulled off the cultured marble the house fell down around us. We spent an incredible amount of time and money making these out of square and out of level walls workable due to she wanted hi-gloss white 4 inch tiles with black tiles and trim throughout, with shampoo cubby in the shower, black trimmed out glass block window ( that the same 3 year old installed), another black custom saop insert above her pedistal sink. We, as another added bonus grouted the black areas in black and the white areas in white, which initially was suppose to being all white. The door she talking about is also 100 years old and god knows how many coats of paint it has. We just repainted over existing paint. It has lead paint on it and never, do I tell anyone that I'm sanding and scraping lead paint. There are laws and fines for this. Nobody cleaned anything in the sink, but the mess on the driveway may be ours. She also failed to mentioned anything about the extra tile I bought and grout that she didn't get. This ended up being a $2400 job (because I gave back $400) and I guarantee you, this is by far the nicest bathroom on the block. We have the best guarantee in town. I guarantee everything we do for as long as I'm in business. I started in 1989 and plan on many more years. If there was anything to fix, I'll fix it, period!"
This was a week long job and a complete bathroom renovation outside of the tub/shower. Shoe gave us an outstanding price for what we wanted done....over a thousand or more from other contractors. He and his crew were professional, polite, and fun for me to work at home with the entire week. They provided excellent guidance and design ideas as well as some areas to complete ourselves so we could save money. Out outdated, tiled bathroom with yellow floor and blue fixtures went through a complete and modern transformation. They walked me through each day and what would be completed, and left everything cleaner than they found it. I honestly cannot thank these guys enough! We have received a ton of complements on our new bathroom, and it was money well spent. I can't wait until we have a new project, Shoe is the first guy I'm going to call!!!
"Due to the amount of calls I get it has been very difficult to keep up. Funny on how they didn't mention the fact of me making 2 trips to their house to make sure of getting the correct material. This cost me $30 in gas and 4 hours of my life. I did meet with the husband once. I also had to spend my money to buy their materials. Folks I don't want to spend my money on my house, why should I spend it on yours. Not to mention the time spent driving and getting the materials. They paid for 8 hours and got not only 8 hours but an additional 5 hours of my time driving around looking and picking up material. They did pay for the materials the day the work was done but with a little hesitation thinking maybe they were included. It is not my fault the work they wanted, required more time. This is a huge problem in our nation, people always wanting something for nothing. I'm sure they don't own this nice house working for free."
