We contracted with the Spiegel Brothers in March of 2013 to remove our old deck and patio and put in a new deck and patio. Our initial discussions were with Mike the sales person. After reviewing Angie?s list we noticed they had a negative review and we asked Mike about it. His explanation was that the guy didn?t want to pay them to finish his deck. Despite this, they had an Angie?s List Super Service award so we figured we would go ahead since other reviews were positive.
Dan and his crew did the work and offered up ideas about the deck. The job went okay with only a few times where workers were not on site. We had one incident at the final inspection where the inspector did not come out. In speaking to Mike about it,
he made a sarcastic comment about this not being their first rodeo. Afterward Dan Spiegel called and told us he had called in the wrong job permit number for inspection.
We agreed to wait on completion of two parts of this job. The first was laying asphalt around a new deck pier that was placed in the driveway. The second was repairing the damage to the driveway caused by the Spiegel Brothers? equipment. We didn?t feel like it made sense for them to repair the driveway when it would most likely get torn up again with the next project we were going to have them do for us, which was a replacement of a pool deck and pouring of a shed foundation.
They never completed these two items ? see our review on the pool deck disaster for the reason why they never finished.
We had used the Spiegel Brothers previously for a Deck in March of 2013 (also reviewed on Angie's List). This review is for a project that included replacement of a concrete pool deck and construction of a shed. Since we had used them before we felt we had a good relationship. It wasn?t until we had a problem that things went very, very wrong.
The Spiegel Brothers broke up and removed all the concrete around the pool, which has stainless steel walls. One of their workers took a jackhammer close to the skimmer and bent the skimmer. At the same time there appeared to be water draining from the pool. We immediately called out a pool guy same day, paid for it out of our own pocket, to try to find the leak. It was not the skimmer, but a conduit that had been moved that related to the pool light. No problem. Lifted up the conduit and the Spiegel Brothers were good to go ahead and continue work.
Once the concrete deck was removed, they poured the foundation for the shed which was poured incorrectly. In addition, the foundation bowed because Dan Spiegel did not put enough bracing on the forms. Also during this part of the job, the workers cut the internet cable to our home and home business. The cable was visible and the workers cut it because it was in their way. When we asked them about it they said, ?well it had to go.?
When the Spiegels finally got one of the concrete forms attached to the pool wall, we discovered a problem. We commented on the fact that we didn?t think the forms would look like they did and Mark Spiegel said he didn?t either which indicated to us that they had never even looked at the forms they were going to use for the job. The forms being used would not give us the edge on the deep end of the pool that Dan Spiegel said it would give us and on one side of the pool the wall was wavy. When Mark Spiegel was asked about the wavy wall, his response was that there would just be a wavy concrete deck. Of course this was not what we wanted so we began to research and work with the Spiegel?s to come up with a solution.
Dan agreed that they would fix the shed foundation and while we worked on figuring out a solution for the pool walls and forms, they would continue with other parts of the job. So they had fill dirt delivered to do some grading. We didn?t think the dirt they had enough dirt delivered to do the job and told their worker multiple times, even asking him to request more fill dirt. His response was he didn?t think they would do it because the Spiegel Brother?s truck had broken down and they had to pay $200 to deliver the dirt that was there. At this point we had already paid for sod to be delivered and needed the grading done no later than the next day. When my husband called Dan Spiegel about this, he quoted an additional cost and said he couldn?t guarantee that he could get workers out to do the work. We decided instead of taking the chance we would take care of that part
of the job ourselves. From this point forward Dan Spiegel would not return any calls. Repeated calls to Mike the sales guy ended with him saying the workers were hunting or they were doing some other job. After a month of no workers coming to the job site, with winter closing in and no way to secure the pool we ended up contacting a lawyer. The Spiegel?s response was to have their lawyer send us a letter demanding additional money to complete the job. At that point, it sounded eerily like the guy who had left a negative review about his deck here on Angie?s List.
At this point it was November and no other companies could do the job until the spring. This left us in a dangerous situation with an unsecured pool in a neighborhood full of kids. With no concrete pool deck, the safety cover could not be installed and the new fence could not be installed since it was to go into the concrete pool deck. Because we were at an impasse, the only way to clear the situation so we could get another contractor to complete the job in the spring was to file suit against the Spiegel Brothers.
In October of 2014 the Spiegel Brothers were found in Breach of Contract and a judgment was handed down by a judge in the circuit court. The judgement can be found on Missouris' casenet site It has been a year since the judgment and the Spiegel Brothers have yet to pay what the court has ordered them to pay. Beware!
Spiegel Brothers have done a number of jobs for me. Their work is excellent and Dan Spiegel is a lovely guy. However, however.... He does make appointments and not keep them, with no notice, and he does disappear for weeks, even months at a time, again with no notice. When they're very busy, he just seems to sink out of sight This is distressing.
He was supposed to come to my house yesterday at 9:00AM. He did not show, he did not answer his telephone, and he did not respond to an email.
So I like him, and I like their work, but they're just not all that reliable. I must say, in all honesty, that this was a small job, not an emergency, and he may well be busy on large jobs. But it isn't that difficult to telephone and say you cannot make an appointment rather than leaving a client waiting for someone who never shows up.
Spielgel Brothers did an excellent job from start to finish on our concrete drive and walkway. The estimated price was right in line with the other "A" rated contractors on Angie's List. They were the only one's that also provided brouchers on decking, fences and stamped concrete that they install.
The workers including both of the brothers showed up and started tearing out the driveway. There was a huge crater under the sunken driveway. They formed up the walkway and drive and put down a good layer of stabilized rock which wasn't under the original driveway. They installed a drain underneath the walkway for the gutter with a pop-up drain on the other side away from the driveway to correct the drainage problem.
On the day of the pour five workers showed up including the two Spielgel brothers, a very smooth operation. They used an exposed aggregate finishing technique and put down two coats of sealer over the next two days.
We have received a number of great compliments from the neighbors. I would highly recommend the Spiegel Brothers for any of your concrete work.
They also installed a section of privacy fencing next to our patio. The work was done done as professionally as the driveway and at reasonable price. I like the fact that they will do the small jobs too.
