Specialty Awning & Canvas Products

The awning is gorgeous.  So professionally crafted, asthetically beautiful.  It is great and built to last.

We have a 100 year old house with a screened in summer house right behind the house.  I had used Specialty Awning 15 years ago and again 10 years ago to replace "curtain" awnings on the sides of our summer house because we had an old receipt showing that they had installed the awnings we were replacing. Now we had one (west facing) awning to replace because the ties had  failed and wind had ripped part of it up.  I called them in September.  Gary came out and measured and looked at things.  I told him I wanted the one curtain replaced and all of the tie-downs for all 4 curtains replaced.  After 2 weeks with no bid, I called the company.  A week later I got the bid sheet. One thing on the bid was the tie-downs, which were listed as"white or black webbing" - Huh?  They would not tell me what color?  I wanted a few things changed and was busy, so I finally got another bid in early November.  I sent in the signed contract with down payment on 11/16. Dy mid-December I had heard nothing.  I called 12/16 and was told my awning "was on the sewing table."  I was told it would be installed within 2 weeks.  I called again on 1/15 because it was not installed and no one had called.  They showed up on 1/16 and installed the new awning and all of the tie-downs.  The product looks fine and the price was fine.  I realize this was a very small job for them, but that is no excuse for the total lack of communication and taking a full 2 months from when I sent in the deposit to installation.  I wish there were a "maybe" category for "would you use them again,"  because I still would consider using them again - I would just insist on better communication.

I looked on Angies List before soliciting bids for awning installations and found "Specialty Awnings" but with only one review.  After getting various bids and talking to various salespersons, I settled on Specialty Awnings.  The sales rep was accommodating and helpful, and the work was completed on schedule.  The company came out three times to verify measurements before the install.  The installers were professional, courteous and worked hard.  The awnings are first rate and look great.  I couldn't be more pleased.

I found Glenlo on Angies List and it had 2 very good reviews, so I called them for a bid to replace the canvas on my 5 awnings.  They came out right away performed the measurements to replace the existing canvas with the same material.  They called me back in 3 days with a bid of $3,186 to perform the job.  I had also contacted Specialty Awnings and they gave me a bid based on the drawings they had in their office from the installation back in 2000.  They agreed to perform the job for $2,000 saving me $1,186.  This was a savings of 37% from a company that had always given me outstanding service and now by checking pricing I know they also give outstanding pricing.  Specialty Awnings has earned my business and I am happy to give them an outstanding grade!

Overall this was a high quality job with some glitches that were eventually resolved. I would do business with this company again. It was several months between when Gary came out to do an estimate and when the job was completed. Part of that delay time was due to prior commitments the company had, part due to weather, and part due to production delays. All the delays were longer than we were told to expect. In addition to the salesman, the owner of the company came out a couple times in advance to plan the job because the structure of our deck required some unusual adaptations. I thought this showed a commitment to quality. Our deck sits above our wood framed garage and is mounted to it's roof. The plywood of the roof is sagging on one side from the weight of the deck. Therefore the vertical supports of the awning needed to be mounted to the stronger underlying garage structure, not the roof that was already sagging. The owner and Gary made the measurements. When the installation crew finally arrived and did the installation the posts had not been made to reach the proper location. We had spent so much time and effort on this particular issue the mistake was surprising. The result was they had to create totally new ones at their shop and send a crew out again. This was just an inconvenience to us but must have cost them a good bit in unexpected labor. It showed they cared to make things right (and also get their final payment). I think many of their customers are businesses and this informs their way of doing business. Business customers are more tolerant of mistakes as long as they are corrected and don't cost them money. When the customer is dealing with their own home as I was it is more personal. It took a few months to get the right perspective. This company did a good job.
