First of all, Mertz was sent out by my home warranty company to fix my furnace that was not blowing warm air.  I was told the heat exchanger was cracked and it would be just as efficient to replace the furnace (20+ years old, 92% efficient) than to replace only the exchanger.  My home warranty company told me the exchanger was still under warranty and I'd had to deal with it myself.  After calling around I was quoted nearly $1000 for the labor.  Finally, I called Mertz and asked how much they would charge to do the labor.  The secretary, Linda, went out of her way to check that warranty and found out it expired December 2014.  She gave me a phone number for the furnace company that said it was expired and told me to pass it to the home warranty company.  After three calls and a cold weekend,  I received info that the furnace would be replaced and it would cost me only $300 for extra work not covered (electrical, adjusting duct work, etc.).  Mertz was able to schedule the next day, was there first thing in the morning and I received an upgraded brand.
The sad news is that I actually went online and entered the serial number of my old furnace and it showed it was expired.  I felt I would've been ripped off if Mertz hadn't gone the extra mile.   I recommend them if you want an honest opinion and fast and courteous service.

He came and looked at the air ducts. He said that they needed cleaned but would not clean them. He told me that I needed to clean them myself. He left without doing anything.
Response from Mertz Heating & Cooling, LLC
"We don't clean air ducts and were letting the member know that they needed to be cleaned. The member was having a problem with his Radiant Heat, which we replaced the Bearing Assembly through his warranty company."

Employees of the company came to measure and gather information for the install.  I received a call from the owner stating that they forgot some measurements and he would have to to come out again at an agreed upon time.  I met the owner at the door, greeted him and let him in.  He looked around my house then asked if I was divorced or getting a divorce (unbelievable!!).  After seeing the look on my face he then explained that he was thinking about it because his wife was a slob (again, believeable). We go to the basement to look at the furnace and to get measurements. While measuring, he starts calling his own employees morons (multiple times). I schedule the install and the first day two young men show up and tell me they should have it done by the end of the day.  As I saw them work (and it didn't appear that they really knew what they were doing) I told them to not rush it and it would be OK if they came back the next day.  They said that they thought they would get it done.  At 9:30 that night they finally admitted that they couldn't  finish.  I told them that when they came in the morning that I would leave the basement door open because I would be gone for awhile in the morning.  Evidently there was no communication back to the company because two different men showed up the next day and they sat in my drive way waiting and finally called me.  I told them the basement  was open and they went in and started working.  When I got home I hear them in the basement working and talking very loud or yelling at each other.  I had the door closed and my child and I could still hear them loud and clear and what they were saying was highly unprofessional.  After about an hour of tolerating this I went down and asking if they could please stop yelling at each other.  The older of the two said he was out of here and started packing up (it was late afternoon anyway).  The next time the employee that got mad and yet another technician came out and "finished" the job.

I did not use the furnace until November. This month I went down to change the filter in the furnace and found that they had taken the filter and smashed it flat to force it into the way too small opening.  It was also sticking out 4 inches..not because it was too big, but because the metal work did not allow it to slide in all the way leaving a very large gap and the air just blew around the filter.  There was also a leak in the freon piping and where they connected it there was major burning of the finish on the exterior of the furnace.  I called them to come out and fix it.  Their receptionist told me there would be a fee to come out and I said that I would not pay a penny to get this fixed.  They came out and tried to make the filter opening bigger by bending the metal down then shoved another filter in which still stuck out 4 inched.  They cranked on the nut to the freon line (a very limited effort to fix the leak) and left.  I found what they did with the filter and found that the freon was still leaking the next day.  I called and told them that it still wasn't fixed.  They said it was fixed and they weren't coming out again.  I told them I would call the insurance company to tell them it wasn't fixed and they said they already called them to inform them that it was.  I was very angry and fed up with their extremely unprofessional manner and their lack of technical quality..

All this work was covered by a home owners insurance policy.  I called the insurance company and told them the whole story.  They told me that they were not using this company any more because of other complaints they had received.  They identified another company to come out and provide an opinion.  They came out and found that the way the metal work/air flow wasinstalled was not suitable, the freon was leaking and  the pressure measured near zero,  the installed orfice was wrong  and installed the correct one which came with the unit and was still attached to it (the manufacturer provided), replaced missing service caps on heat pump, and repaired insulation on the inside of the unit that was pulled into blower (they had cut out the side of the furnace to initially bring the air from the side but the air would not have blown across the elements efficinetly so the patched the side with metal and didn't fix the insulation that they also cut up).  In summary they fixed a real mess.

We have a home warranty in place so have been limited with the companies we could deal with for most things that have come up with the house. Mertz was certainly the better of these experiences. They came out promptly to look at the issue and did most of the dealing with the home warranty people for me. The job was performed efficiently and they were very respectful of my home and patient with me in talking through the various options, pros and cons, for the new water heater choice. We only paid about half the cost thanks to the home warranty so that was a definite plus too. Overall the work was quick and painless and I was very happy with the service Mertz provided.
