The first meeting we had with Vince was to go over plans, the variety of materials including wood, composite, the railings, accessories and design possibilities as well as potential cost of what we were looking at. He's a real low key guy but extremely patient and it's clear that he wants to make sure his customer's specifications and expectations are met. No pressure!
He gave us plenty of time to think things over and came out several times with new colors once we decided on composite and the same maintenance free type railing in black. He was great with making recommendations or providing sample looks when you are trying to finalize things. However, the great way he approaches things is to reassure you that there are some things that can be decided as we go and he definitely kept his promise and the results exceeded our expectations.
Once we signed the deal, we went over the paper work and an estimated date was given to begin. He gave a 2-3 weeks for the completion date, was on time and the end result was awesome! Vince is an excellent craftsman and both Vince and his partner Tony are hard workers. They are very neat and make the process painless. My husband and I are very particular about our home and we both feel the all aspects of our deck are nothing but perfect for our home and backyard.
Vicki and Joe Pitlyk
was the only one willing to work with us to do the work while leaving the existing base structure in place. Everyone else wanted to rebuild the entire structure at additional cost.
We discussed options, and settled on composite decking and black aluminum railing. Vince was flexible in developing the work plan, and with accommodating our schedule, as we had a family wedding occurring at our house and needed the job completed relatively soon. The work was done during the spring so weather did occasionally alter the planned work schedule, and Vince
was responsive to text messages, allowing us to communicate about those schedule changes, or to clarify things that were happening as the work unfolded, which inevitably does. There were a few changes required, which he made easy to work through, and he was especially accommodating with the railing, which needed some modification to be installed. Vince was great about modifying the railing so it would work with our deck configuration. He was also good about cleaning up each day, and removing everything from the job when it was completed.
We are very satisfied with the results ? the deck looks great ? and with the overall experience working with Vince. We feel we got great value and a quality job.
So Vince from La Spina came out to talk with us about the project. He listened to what we wanted to do (new rail), what materials we wanted to use (maintenance free, rust free, rot free), and what other considerations we had (extra stability in one area). He said to think of him as a tool that would help us do our deck the way we envisioned it. He gave us some ideas of where to look online that we hadn't been yet. He did some research on his own as well. One thing we all knew from the first meeting was that we wanted to keep our solid posts solid, but cover them with maintenance-free aluminum sleeves. Vince made it sound easy to order porch support posts and cut them to the length we wanted. We never could have done that on our own. My husband got online and started hunting. The first couple hours were frustrating, but finally he found a manufacturer and then a rep who sold 12-foot support posts that, when cut into 40" sections, would slip over our existing 6x6 cedar posts, effectively making them taller than code. We and Vince went over everything, talking options as we went. He had good questions to focus us on specifics. My husband charted it out; so did Vince. Then my husband ordered all the railing and gates online because everyone local wanted a 25% upcharge for getting round balusters instead of square.
When the railing was delivered, Vince was ready to begin. Unfortunately, at the same time, our driveway was getting poured over a period of 5 days, and then no one could drive on it for a week. Vince was fine with that. He was very easy to stay in touch with via email.
I emailed Vince when the concrete was ready to drive on. He had to take a couple days to finish another job, then start on ours. He showed up on the day we agreed on and set right to work. He removed what railing we hadn't, and eventually hauled all of that away. He took his time the first day, getting used to installing a line of product he wasn't familiar with, and we understood that. It was fun to watch the railing progress along the deck. At the end of the first day, if we looked out just the kitchen window, we could see just one area that looked completely done, and it was beautiful.
The stairs between the upper and lower level were something that we all agreed would have to be handled as we saw how the product went together. The handrail on one side was a no-brainer. On the other side, we didn't need a rail, but closure to keep kids from falling off. Vince made it look like a rail, both sides parallel, but on that second side, he actually drilled up into the wood and fitted the balusters between a bottom rail and overhead wood. Super job on that!
While working over several days' time, he often asked if we were happy with what we were seeing. We really appreciated that because little things could be addressed early. Sometimes he called us out to make a decision whether to do something one way or another. He explained why either would be good, but gave us the opportunity to make the choice based on how we use our deck. Again, highly appreciated this. Several times I chose a different way than he'd recommend, but he was fine with that.
Two support posts were rotting and needed replacing. When it was time to do that, Vince suggested that we didn't need either post. On the first one, which just sat in the middle of the deck, kind of in the way, he suggested angling over to another post for out-of-the-way support. What a tremendous difference that made! On the other, he suggested extra support at the top, which he built. It's amazing how much view that opened up. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it.
Then there was the octagon. I have never liked it. If I stood on it and someone walked across the deck, the whole octagon vibrated. Vince assured me that it was built solid and would not fall down. I asked him to improve it. He came up with a couple of ideas, very similar to what I knew needed to be done from an engineering standpoint. I was happy that we concurred on that. It might have been safe before, but it FEELS safe now.
On a daily basis, Vince hauled away all the cardboard that all the parts came in. Day by day, I got more of my garage back. Near the end, all the old wood was taken away.
Vince is a professional, all the way. He came when he said he would. He did what he said he would, and more. On the last day, he said to keep him in mind for any future projects. Which reminded me...there is an area of the deck that needs shade. I showed it to him. He said, you mean like a pergola? Yes! When we're ready to do that, I'm calling Vince.
He did and we looked at the needed repair and discussed how a job to fix it would proceed. We could do it two ways and one way wold be more expensive than the other. I explained that I had a budget that was down to very little left from other needed repairs. The full extent of the instant problem was revealed by the previous, other work being done but the repair couldn't be folded into that job. I told Vince to do a basic, serviceable job -no frills, and he made me an offer that fit the last of my budget. He said he would start the work in 2 days and he and a co-worker showed up on time and ready to work on that day.
Of course there was a hidden problem with the job as is typical with some repairs of older construction work and while it was a pain in the rear it really wasn't a big surprise. The original plan for the fix couldn't be used. We then discussed an alternate method of doing the fix. Vince knew what I wanted and we discussed how it would look and what would be needed in building materials to do the job.
He and his co-worker secured the materials, did the job quickly and well, in a good workmanlike manner, and it looks good and does what it needs to do. The cost of the materials was an extra cost BUT the cost of the job, which did expand in time and effort, was NOT raised beyond the original price. I asked if we needed to talk money before he proceeded since the nature and length of the work did change and he declined. It wasn't a big deal for a craftsman to do the work differently but it did add time and effort. He did a complete clean up.
I'm happy with the job, WOULD recommend and WOULD hire Vince again.
needed to be done to get our 34 year old balcony up to code. The existing posts and cross beam were eaten away by carpenter
bees. He came to do the work on time and got it all completed in just a few days For all that he did we feel we got a bargain and
it was so nice having it all go so well with no hassles at all. We would hire him again and recommend him to others.
Of the 3 contacts we chose, Vince Spain was willing to work behind the first contractor, is professional in his approach and worked us into his tight schedule. Vince came and saw the problems and proposed a solution. Vince was great at keeping us up to speed when we had weather delays so we could inform our resident. He worked with the city inspector and we now have a fine looking deck!
Yes, we would work with Vince again!
