We called Dawn to do an estimate for interior painting of our home. Dawn called back immediately and scheduled our in home estimate. Upon meeting Dawn we were very impressed with her professionalism, attention to detail, and punctuality. She did a walk through of our home and told us she would have the estimate in the mail that night. Upon receiving the estimate we called and had the work scheduled. She was able to start immediately. We had her begin on Monday 10/12 and was completely finished by Wednesday 10/14. Her team (Clayton, Liz and Dawn) did a magnificent job. Our home was extremely smoke damaged due to smoking cigarettes in the home for over 14 years. Our realtor came to view the work and was so impressed she asked for Dawn's business cards to use her in the future.
Now that our interior is done we are scheduling our exterior to be completed by Dawn and her awesome team!
Awesome!! I wouldn't trust anyone else to paint my house. Dawn has painted nearly every room in my house over the years. She is prompt (too early for me though LOL) protects everything with coverings, and cleans up better than it was before she arrived. She took me to the Handyman Hardware to get the paint and help pick out the color I was looking for and the right type of paint. Unless you really know paint, this is necessary. Sometime ONE COAT DOESN"T COVER. That's just a fact. You can't paint a black wall with one coat of white and expect it to cover; it just doesn't. Anyway, they moved my furniture, and plate covers, blinds, and drapes. You can suspect after removing a popcorn ceiling there is going to be some patching; which they did. They spackled the ceiling and left it to dry and came back they next day. Then they sanded and finished painting. I had bi-fold doors in there that had semi-broken hardware on it and they went to Handyman and got the parts and fixed it! Very happy with that.
I love that they are so conscientious about my home, cleaning up so well and going out of their way to please. I don't know if they used one coat or two; I didn't watch. They are the professionals and they know what they are doing and do what is necessary to do the job right.
I saw the complaint below and noticed they went ahead and had the second coat done. That was necessary! Did you see the colors?
If you want the job done by nice people who care and have years of experience and know what they are doing they are great.
We were quoted $2250 (plus $30 for estimating amount of paint needed) with Dawn saying she was confident only one coat would be needed, since we were buying high quality Sherwin Williams paint and were painting a darker brown color over existing lighter brown/tan color. Two of the accent areas were to have a very dark brown over the existing light brown/tan color. The exception was the ceiling, which she suggested be painted white so it would be less apt to show existing drywall/taping issues. When we asked about coverage with the white paint, she said she still thought only one coat would be sufficient. We discussed payment and she said she would take payment after she was finished and we were satisfied with the job.
After the first day, 3/4/14, I noticed several areas on the walls where paint did not cover uniformly and areas of the old lighter color were showing through. Darker accent walls were done with a paint brush instead of a roller, resulting in numerous brush strokes showing. I spoke to her on the phone and she said the darker paint seemd to be very oily and did not go on properly and it could be resolved with a second coat. She also mentioned one of her assistants had to go home sick at noon. After the second day, 3/5/14, ceiling was done and coverage was very poor. Even though she estimated 6 gallons would be needed for ceiling, only slightly more than 3 gallons had been used. At this point we came to the conclusion that 1) the paint wasn't being applied properly or 2) she knew from the beginning that she was going to do two coats. With our house looking very unfinished, she said we were going to need more paint for the walls and we would have to pay another $1250 labor for another coat to fix the accent walls and ceiling.
My husband had been called out of town on business until 3/7/14, and wanted to see the work in person before any decision was made. She became insistent that we make a decision by 3/6/14 because she needed to pay her assistants and she wanted to know whether to paint another coat or just remove her materials, put our blinds back up, etc. She also said she wouldn't be able to work on 3/7/14 due to another commitment and, if she couldn't finish on 3/6/14, we would have to wait until 3/10/14 to finish the job. At this point, we felt the paint hadn't been applied properly to begin with or she purposely underbid knowing she was going to say we needed another coat. We were being pressured, now that our house was in such a poor state, to agree to pay her 50% more to correct the situation. We made the decision to have her remove her materials, put blinds and covers back up and when my husband got back into town on 3/7/14, she agreed to meet and discuss the quality of the job and how to proceed.
After looking at the quality of the work, and the fact that some of our higher end fabric blinds were not reinstalled correctly, we decided NOT to pay her any more money to finish the job. Our intention was to negotiate a lower price due to the quality of the work but Dawn would not agree that the work was poor quality. She insisted that her work was quality and, at one point, suggested that the paint may have been bad. (My husband has since taken the paint back to Sherwin-Williams and been assured that is not the case.) Dawn insisted on receiving full payment and left abruptly. She did not allow us to negotiate.
Dawn McCoy did not give us a good faith estimate of the total cost of the job. She either did not do quality work to begin with, resulting in walls that looked unfinished, or she underbid, knowing she was going to ask for more money to finsh the job.
