It went fairly smoothly given the fact that it was an old house and little surprises came up when we started rearranging walls.

After my husband was hired by Comfort Architecture to work on their website, I had a chance to see Randall's work. I loved how it looked so I asked him to come take a look at our kitchen- to see if he had any ideas on how we could make it less "boxy" and more open so that my husband and I can cook together, and when we eventually have kids we will be able to see them eating while we are cooking in the kitchen.
The head architect (Randall Comfort) asked what time would work best for us, to have him see the space and I jokingly said that it would be best if he could come after I got home from work, and after we had dinner. Randall agreed, and came over at 8 p.m. which worked out great for us- no stress about rushing to accommodate a stranger.
Randall arrived on time, and we took him through our kitchen. He asked us to show him how we cooked, and even watched us as we unloaded the dishwasher so he could see how we worked together. He asked me all kinds of questions about the problems I have in the kitchen (everything is out of my reach!), and talked with my husband about his concerns (price!) and the mess it would make.
Then we sat around the kitchen table and we just talked about the house in general what we liked and what we didn't like. It was like having a friend over (well my husband already knew him) but he was very approachable and wanted to know all about things that I ordinarily would feel bad complaining about. He wanted to offer changes that would capture as many challenges as possible- so even though we thought he would only want to know about how we used are stove- he asked questions about if we tracked dirt in through the back door.
After an hour, Randall left, promising to come back again to take some measurements at a convenient time. (I guess he did it while my husband was working from home). A few days later Randall arranged to come back over at 8 p.m. again. Even though we had agreed that we were paying for one option he brought two. One was a very standard option- updating everything and the second option was something we would never have considered- but was PERFECT! He totally turned our challenges into things that would make our house better. He thought to change the back half of our dining room into our kitchen and creating an island for our stove- he even found a way to add a powder room which was something I wanted but was too afraid to ask for because I thought it wasn't possible.
I could go on and on about how great the design was but the best part was that Randall gave us options. He gave us exactly what we thought we wanted and he gave us an option we were not imaginative enough to know what we really wanted. He stayed within our budget considerations and he gave us very clear next steps and did not pressure us to move it forward. We were aprehensive about having an architect in our house- I thought they would be judgmental about our budget, or pushy about doing what they wanted to do. Comfort Architecture was not that way at all. It was like having a creative and trusted friend come over with whole new way of looking at how our home could be.
