I would recommend Builders Stair Supply Inc to everyone.  They were so helpful from start to finish.  I get so many compliments on the stairs and railing they installed.  Mark the builder that installed the stairs was incredible.  His skill level is very impressive.

I spoke with Robin and she was one of the most helpful people I've had the pleasure of working with! I had a disastrous experience with another stair company and I was calling Builder's Stair to see if they could help straighten out the mess. Robin helped me find the stair parts I needed and got them shipped there very quickly. She even helped me load my car as I had my hands full with my child. I really wish I had found them first!

The steps are so solid it's like walking on concrete. The price I have listed was for wood and labor. I'm staining and painting the treads myself.

The previous builder didn't build the stairs right.  They were excellent and I am going to get them to do the stairs going down to my basement.  The only problem I had is my receipt said I ordered Hickory, they built them out of Poplar, they rebuilt them out of Hickory, and didn't give me any grief.  They cleaned up also.  I give them high ratings for everything.

Everything went excellent.  They did really well.  They did a good job.  They were on time and prompt.  They did make a mistake, but they did fix it immediately so I really don’t have much to complain about.  I would tell friends and family to ensure they get a copy of the receipt because that is what saved me.  They ordered a different wood.  I had hickory, but they had poplar.  My receipt showed hickory, so they had to remake it.  Their price was excellent.  They were responsive.  They got back to me immediately.  I would use them again if I needed to.

I should have stopped in the very beginning but since there are very few actual custom staircase builders I figured that they were just very busy. I was wrong. It took almost 30 days just to get them to come out to just look at the job. I was trying to coordinate their work with a floor layer that was going to install a new oak floor. There was an issue as to what was the proper or best method to install the new newel posts upstairs and how to tie the post and the floor upstairs into the knee wall coming down to the entry. Once they had inspected the site I thought I had been very clear as to how I wanted the posts installed and the position of the new rail. I couldn't have been more wrong. The installer botched the work. He was able to go back and correct the post positions but that was at the expense of a second day which after some discusion they agreed to not charge me for. There was now a second problem. When the top post was repositioned he installed the cap for the knee wall over the top of the landing tread instead of level with the landing tread and floor so that all was at the same height. He also installed the bullnose landing for the top step when I had told him that the floor layer wanted to put that down with the new oak floor. When I brought it to their attention I was refered back to the installer. At this time I discovered that he subcontracts his services to them and that he was not really an employee. When I called him about the issue he was not really interested to come back out. I clearly was not happy with the work and felt that I should not have had to demand that he come back out to correct this. He should have offered to do so on his own. This is not what I expected from a custom builder or one from Angie's List. I spoke to the owner who himself didn't offer to come out and look at the job either. After thinking about what to do with this, I finally carefully dismantled the screwed up section and with some additional parts produced by a very helpful gentleman named Mark from their company on a Saturday morning and on his time, fixed the issue myself. I then stained & finished the natural oak since they don't do any finish work and notified them that they could send the installer out to install the spindles finally. At this point they demanded 50% of the estimated cost. No where in the estimate was there any payment stipulations and they had never produced a contract or workorder in any form for me to sign. They would not come out to install the spindles which they still had until they recieved a payment. I did oblige since the job was more than half done at this point. Problem #3 now occurs. I told the installer that I was not going to paint the spindles (Chinese made) since they already had a nice white finish on them. He never mentioned that his installation process would leave visibly noticeable holes in the spindles..I just about hit the roof when I came home that evening....At this point they wanted the rest of the payment which I refused until this was corrected. They eventually sent out another gentleman who tried to cover them up without a very good result either. This was not his fault at this point and I just wanted this nighmare over. I spoke with Robin who offered me a discount for the trouble. At the time I didn't know that it was the same $75 discount that they offer all new business and the same one advertised on Angie's List. They had not previously mentioned any discounts available. In retrospect it makes me mad, but I refused it & demanded a greater discount considering all the aggrevation. She did eventually agree to a greater reduction but I still feel that it wasn't enough. In the end I feel I have over paid at $122 per foot for the work. I will never use them again or nor recommend them. I could not be home to watch and personally supervise every last detail and they clearly do not communicate with their clients or listen to them. They simply did what they wanted to get the job done quickly as possible. There are other comestic issues that include screw holes that were plugged when the screws could have been concealed in a less invasive manner. All the parts but the spindles were stained red oak with a clear sealer. The plugs that were used were not cut from the same wood used and thus the grain didn't blend. I was informed they don't even try to do that. The plugs stained differently and the grain was not even oriented with the surrounding material. The installer even forgot to install two other small pieces of trim which had been brought to their attention as well. His work showed that he was clearly capable of better work. Either he just didn't seem to think through what he was doing or doesn't think it matters. I expected a much better job from a custom staircase builder, especially for the cost of such a simple job.

Robin is great to work with for choosing materials and scheduling the job. She sent Mark to build the stairs. Mark was very professional always on time and the level of workmanship is extremely high. The job took about 10 working days overall with a break in the middle to have the stairs stained and sealed before he came back to install the balusters. I had three bids which took a long time to gather as stair building is a very specialized trade and theirs was the most inclusive and a great price as well. More importantly, they seemed to be the most trustworthy, honest, and helpful contractor that bid the jog.
