This is the second major remodeling project we have done with Jon and JNM Carpentry.  The first was a full kitchen, family room and two bathrooms.  The reason we selected Jon the first time was his honest approach and straight forward budgeting process. Our second experience was more of the same.  We had a complete basement finish project and provided him with a design for everything except the bathroom, Jon did the layout for that himself and we couldn't be happier with the results.
The house is nearly 50 years old and had a few challenges along the way, but Jon was professional and dedicated to solving any issues that arose.  He has very high standards and holds his team and subs to them.  Several of the inspectors were complementary towards his thorough and well executed approach.
A few specific highlights: he did an excellent job framing around the plumbing and ductwork, helping it blend into the flow of the rooms, he is a carpenter himself and does an excellent job planning the work from framing to finish so the results are achieved, and he sticks with the job until all the loose ends are tied up.
We would both recommend Jon and his team, and hire them again for our next project

Jon and his crew did an excellent job on our remodel.  They are very reliable, the job was done as promised, and on time.  They were very good about communicating the times they would and would not be on the job, which was important to me so I could work my schedule around those times. They were very good about answering any of our questions. We were confident in their work and actually added several other small projects in our house to the 'to do' list.  I have already recommended them to friends.

Overall experience was average to below average. I joined Angie's list to find a reputable contractor who can repair the mistakes they made. JNM relocated the AC/Heat vent and the cold air return  and did not bother to connect the duct work in the basement,. It is covered by a ceiling so we did not notice it until I had the AC company check to see why my kitchen was not getting sufficient air. I also need to have all the electrical repaired....they overloaded  the circuits and we are always blowing fuses. They ordered the wrong cabinets and refused to take the blame for it....even though I had the cabinets I wanted in writing so eventually they will also have to be replaced. We had so many issues with them that I had to pick my battles so the cabinets didnt make the list. I agree with the others John is very difficult to work with.
Response from JNM Carpentry LLC
"I don't like to talk badly about people, but I believe she has a mental illness because she would be fine one day and upset the next. It took her 7 years after job was complete to post this and never contacted me to make me aware of this problem she had with her heating and cooling. If she had I would have gladly made it right at that time."

Excellent results! His crew had great attention to detail, did a good job with the installation, spot painted as needed afterwards, and always cleaned up after themselves. I love the finished look of the beam: especially since it was stained to mirror the look of my oak floors.

Everything went really well until it came to the drywall finish work and an issue with the banister staining. Long story short, Jon has a HOT temper and had fits on several occasions (in front of our small children) when we asked that they complete the finish work correctly. We were disappointed in Jon's lack of professionalism during the last phase of the job. Because of his temper, we will never use JNM Carpentry again!!

As other reviewers noted, Jon is very obstinate and does what he wants and not what was agreed to and contracted for. Our contract reads all surfaces that he repaired would be "ready to paint" . Two painting contractors laughed when they saw the job he did and I was forced to pay over $400 just to properly smooth the surfaces that he assured me (and contracted for)) would be "ready to paint." He did not remove and repair all the corners because he said it was not needed. Again, I was forced to pay the painting contractor to do this work that he was to do under the terms of our contract.
He or his workers scratched some of my laminate flooring which resulted in me spending a number of hours to replace. This so-called "proffesional" does not use any vacuum system when he sands. Be prepared to spend hours removing all the drywall dust he leaves behind. I remember him saying I would never know they were there because they clean up so well. Bull!
I picked this guy because he was local and had an "A" rating. All I can say is he must have had his employees and family members give him all those "A" s because his work does not deserve it.
My suggestion to Jon is to specialize in working for the blind so they will never know he does such a crappy job.
Response from JNM Carpentry LLC
"Customer wrote this after I sued him for my money. He settled the lawsuit before the case went to trial. He told me if I didn't cancel the lawsuit he would give me a bad review, but if I dropped the lawsuit he would give me a good review. I don't respond well to blackmail or bullies."

The reason I picked JNM is that from the start, Jon was more willing to listen to what I wanted rather than what he wanted to do.  Others I contacted acted like they didn't want to touch the project unless they could expand the scope of the project beyond what I wanted it to be.  He listened to me and also had good ideas and suggestions that were within the scope of what I was asking for.
It took a little while to get things going, but not unreasonably long.  I have no qualms whatsoever on the quality of the work and they way it was delivered.  Jon and the guys who worked from him were friendly and respectful while in our home.  There were some elements of the project that got a bit more difficult than what he originally anticipated.  A time or two he said "We might have to charge a little more," but he stuck with with the original contract price - which was reasonable/competiive.
Yes, I'd use JNM again and would feel comfortable recommending him.

My experience with them went very well. They were a little pricey. For what they had to do, it was probably a reasonable price, but it was just an expensive job for me. They were also very good working with me and helping me control some of the costs. I was allowed to paint it myself and provide some of the materials they needed that I already had. So they were willing to work with me at cutting my costs. They were very clean, prompt and professional. They did a real good job. They were very impersonal. That was almost kind of a drag, but that's just not my personality. But they did their job. I understood that. They did break one thing they didn't fix. I was a little disappointed in that, but I'm not too upset. I would definitely use them again. I got several bids for the work, and they came way under everyone else.

He suggested I go back to where I purchased my cabinet to see if they have a more shallow cabinet. I would have never thought of this and liked his suggestion. He took out my old cabinet and installed the new one I purchased.

We had an appointment for him to come on October 3 at 6pm. He showed up on time. He measured the area and was clear about what he would provide as far as materials and what we should provide. He said it would take 2 days and he could start the following Monday. Everything turned out exactly as he said it would. He did a great job on the backsplash as well as clean up. Would definitely recommend him to anyone and would use him again for future projects.

Jon and his crew did an excellent job.  They were always very courteous and considerate.  The work done was above and beyond that which is required by city code.  You can tell by Jon's work that he is a perfectionist.  The carport does not look like an add on but instead looks like it was part of the house when the house was built.  His bid listed in detail all the work that he was going to do and there were no surprise additional costs incurred.  We are very happy with his work and will definitely contact him for future home improvements.

The first 2 jobs, bathrooms and laundry, went pretty well. His empolyees were artists but Mr. John is most unpleasent to deal with and out right lied to me at least once. But the work was finally done to my specifications.
The 3rd job was a nightmare. He didn't listen to what I wanted and then argued over it. The cabinets weren't measured correctly and the doors were wrong. I agreed to pay for half the cost of the door change but he turned around and charged me extra for lighting and glass shelves. Items included in the original bid.
The last  job cut it for me, I'll never hire him again.

Everything was great. I needed to replace the staircase to my second floor as the flooring folks told me that no center support was installed when the house was built. The treads were made of particle board and were cracking at the sides of the staircase. They were holding on by only 1/2" into the grooves of the staircase trim. It was only a matter of time before one of the broke.
Jon came in and completely removed the faulty staircase and replaced it with properly supported treads and risers. Needless to say, the center support was installed and the stairs are completely quiet. Beforehand, they would creak very loudly on each step and you could see them lowering by 1/2" as you went up the stairs.
Obviously, they had to access underneath the staircase. This meant removing the drywall underneath. The drywall was the ceiling to the staircase leading to the basement. Once they were done with the actual staircase, the guys installed new drywall and did all the mud work so it would be ready to paint.
Finally, Jon checked a 3-way light switch that was acting strange and fixed it in no time.
Overall, they were very professional and dedicated to the quality of the work. I will definitely hire them again for future projects!

JNM Carpentry LLC was very professional. They came right out there, they gave us a quote and they were like three or four days fixing it. He was bonded, he had insurance. He carried his own insurance. He came out and did an estimate within 48 hours, and then he scheduled an appointment and did everything with a professional contract. He wrote up the terms, wrote up the material, everything. He put aluminum in caps on the beams so they wouldn't rot out anymore, it was very nice. He handled working long distance very well. He was very punctual, he came out within 48 hours, gave me a price quote, we executed a contract, and by the next weekend he came out and the work was done.

The remodel was extensive and was completed while we occupied the home. Jon and his team were great to work with, they were absolutely professional, courteous and respectful at all times.  He stuck to his quote and was transparent and open with all cost issues and modifications, we actually selected him because we sensed that would be how he operated and we were proven correct.
His expectations are very high and he demands the same from his team and his subcontractors.  Our home is located in Creve Coeur, an area whose building codes and enforcement are very thorough; Jon and all his subcontractors passed every inspection the first time.  We even received several compliments from the building inspector about the quality of the workmanship and the high standards of our contractor.
After completion, Jon has been great with punch list items.  He is very interested in keeping his clients happy and has kept his word regarding any follow up items or additional work.
At the end of the day, we were very satisfied clients; clients with a beautiful new kitchen, modern bathrooms, a main floor laundry and a contractor we can trust.
