***As a quick side note: If you're considering putting a cedar shake roof on your house, don't. Don't get it. Don't even consider it. There are contractors in St. Louis who will install it. Unlike other areas of the country, though, here there are only a couple of uninsured fly-by-nights who will do the required maintenance. You will be at their mercy. I know. I bought a house with one twenty years ago.***
Anyway, along come the hailstorms of spring 2015. Our insurance agent didn't want to send out an inspector until his "knowledgeable, trustworthy friend" looked at it first. Meanwhile, next door neighbor gets new roof and gutters --same insurance company, different office. Daughter gets new roof. Neighbors all along street and in subdivision get damages repaired. West county basically got a redo. A steady stream of roofers drive in, leave business cards, talk to us, leave samples. We find spare time and go roof shopping. Saw some really bad jobs; crossed a couple of cagey roofers off the prospect list. Found styles we didn't like, namely slate. Found colors that wouldn't do. Talked to roofers who were out to make easy money and move on.
Looking around really helped. Finally we came across a similar house in St. Albans with the perfect roof for us. Roofer was Cardinal Contractors. Did an angieslist search and read some feedback on Cardinal and Aaron. When you search for Cardinal, there are several companies with slightly different names. Be sure you get Cardinal Contractors on N. Main in St. Charles. Ask for Aaron. I'd read a good review on him, so I was happy when he was the one who came to meet us. He talked us through everything. He always listened. He was on site often--a big plus, and when not, if we needed him, he arrived amazingly quickly. There were a couple issues we thought we had; he explained everything in detail, without any I-know-best attitude, and it turned out to be non issues. For example, we thought the new roofing wasn't horizontal in two places, so my husband took a photo, printed it on graph paper and found out that it was indeed as perfectly straight as Aaron said, just an optical illusion. Aaron did everything he promised, and more. When he painted some trim on the dormers, he decided the cedar had been dinged up a little, so he painted that too. He spray painted the roof vents to match the new roof before installing. He painted all vertical pipes on the roof (stacks and radon mitigation vent) so they'd be unnoticeable.
The crew worked from sun up to dark. I never saw guys standing around talking, on the phone, or wasting time. Aaron and his crew have restored my faith in roofers. Every evening before they left, they cleaned up. Trash, pieces of roof, plywood, tools, whatever.
Our driveway is only two years old, and it's stamped concrete. To say we worried about Meridian putting a ginormous dumpster on it would be putting it mildly. Aaron explained how it would work. He took photos of the driveway in case there were issues later. There weren't.
I was concerned that Aaron would request the final check before everything was complete, because he was doing a great job, and I didn't want to have to tell him no, not yet, not until x, y, or z is removed, finished, painted, etc. To my pleasant surprise, he did not. When there was absolutely nothing left to be done except sit on the bench and admire our perfect new roof, he requested --and I was happy to give him-- the balance.
Aaron Wallis, from Cardinal Contractors, was project leader, he did an
outstanding job. He was with my project from beginning to end visiting
the site probably several hours each day. Aaron's attention to detail
was outstanding. He coordinated everything, all of the material
delivery and roofing crews, everything.
My roof is steep (12 pitch), large (5000 sq ft) and somewhat complex and
as such required a full week to completely tear-off and replace,
although two days were cut short due to heavy rain. My roof has lots of
valleys along with full hip and ridge venting which also had to be
replaced.
Cardinal Contractors installed an Owens-Corning Total Protection Roofing
System with ice and water shielding and a full synthetic underlay.
They did additional valley work to prevent a return of ice damage. I
initially relayed my issues, concerns and problems to Aaron and he
translated them into roofing solutions. The roofing crews did the job
exactly as had been described by Aaron including the special handling of
several problem areas.
Aaron did the original on-roof inspection returning to meet with the
claims adjuster from my insurance company he made certain the adjustor
considered every aspect of my roof . I did contact two other
recommended roofers to look at the job, while both provided complete
bids, neither seemed to have the level of interest or follow-up that
Cardinal and Aaron had. In their defense this was during a very busy
season with lots of storm damage to properties in the area, they did
eventually me call back.
On my recommendation two friends also had full roof replacements
performed by Cardinal again with Aaron Wallis handling the projects.
At the end of the job Cardinal Contractors provided a paid-in-full
statement, contractors final release, full lien waivers and an
Owens-Corning roofing system warranty document.
Overall I was very satisfied, I would use Cardinal again.
