DO NOT CONTRACT THEM IF YOU ARE DOING A SMALL JOB. Randy and his son has a way of brushing you off if your home project is small. They do not have the ability to meet all their customer's requirements and make empty promises. This deck project started last summer (2012). I was home for about month or so helping my mother remodel our home. Our old deck was falling apart and so we decided to put in a new deck. A simple design, 12 feet off the ground, 10x10 square deck. I demolished the deck and started looking for contractors. I was introduced to Randy through a friend and the first meeting with him went pretty well. Seemed like he knew what he was doing and showed some of his work. The thing that he boasted about it was the fact that his company was asked to do a job for HGTV network in Extreme Home Makeover. He told me that they were very good at what they do and they can get it done fast.... Well that statement was only partially true when it came to our deck. Granted, they were very good at what they do but they were the worst people to try to get a hold of. My nightmare with them began at the very start of the project. Randy was suppose to send out his crew to come and dig three piers for the deck while he and his son worked on another project that was much bigger than ours. Well, that was and quot;brush offand quot; number 1. They were too busy working on the other project that they couldn't get anyone to come out to my mom's place to get the piers dug. Knowing that I was leaving from my mom's place within a week, I offered to dig the piers, get it inspected by the county, and pour the concrete, set everything up so that he could come out and build the deck after the concrete had settled. He agreed. Within two days, I had the piers dug, inspected, and concrete poured... but where is Randy? Making excuses how he won't be able to come out to work on the deck. Making empty promises of how fast his team works and they'll have everything finished in one day, blah blah blah. I was a sucker and bought it. I let him off the hook. To make a long story short, Randy is very hard to get a hold of. Called many times, but no answers and rarely took the initiative to call us back. Many promises but never able to follow through on his promises unless you are persistant in chasing him down. When he does show up, he makes up a lot of excuses to try and push back the work that needs to be done. Once he is gone, it's incredibly hard to get him back out. His excuse is that he lives very far away and so he doesn't want to come out here to just work on this job. I told him if that was the case then he should not have taken the project. So until now, there are still some minor issues with the deck and there is no sign of Randy anywhere! To be fair, the work he did was very good but just getting him to do that was a nightmare that I wouldn't want anyone else to go through. One other thing that i want to point out is that Randy is very good at making excuses and he sometimes tries to talk himself out of things he doesn't want to do. What I mean is, he would assure you that what he is doing is for your best interest but in reality it might be to make his work a bit easier. So if you do decide to hire Randy to do anything, make sure you do enough research so that you know what is in your best interest. In conclusion, he does good work but unreliable in his communication and his punctuality. Would I hire them again for a small job. Definitely NO. Would I hire them for a big job? Probably not, I don't think the quality of work is worth all the crap that we had to put up with. There are other contractors out there! Remember, he lives really really far away... so if you are not close by to where they are, you might not ever see them again.

Response from Randy Peterson Construction
The home owner called us a year after her deck was built. We went to her house to see what the problem was but because it was raining that day, we could not fix it then. We told the home owner and her son we would be back on Thursday the same week. We called Thursday morning to confirm and thought she said it was ok to come. However, when we arrived at the house, she would not let us in. We told her at that time we would be working out of town for the next 5 weeks and would call her when we returned. She called when we were in N. Dakota and we explained again we would call when we returned. There is a language barrier with the home owner. The son called our home number twice while we were working out of town. He did not leave a return number (the number on caller id was a skype number and our return call would not go through) and we no longer have a valid number for him. We would like to resolve this issue but cannot continue to drive over an hour to her house just to be turned away
