Ben answered my phone call promptly and was out to see my roof and give me an estimate the same day or next day, he emailed me an estimate promptly. When called later to schedule his company do the work I reminded him that we had talked about removing the chimney but it wasn't on the estimate. Ben agreed that the company would do this work as well. Above & Beyond roofing company arrived very early on the day scheduled and had 14-15 guys to do the work of removing the existing roof. I could not tell who was in charge and I spoke to several different men at different times when they had questions. No one seemed to know that the chimney was to be removed but they were glad to do it when I told them it needed to be done. It's a good thing I was home to make sure this work was done. I specifically asked them to not throw their cigarette butts down in my yard - even going so far as to show them where I have a flowerpot filled with sand that they could use to dispose of their butts. The old roof was removed by 11:00 and the new singles delivered while the guys left for lunch. After lunch the roof was repaired in spots and the new shingles applied by 4-6 guys and they were done by 5:30 that day. The guys did use tarps to throw the old shingles on to dispose of the trash but I later had to pick up multiple chunks of brick and pieces of shingles out of my yard. I picked up over 95 roofing nails out of my front yard AND driveway. I also picked up around 40-50 cigarette butts out of the front yard which I found very disgusting , especially after I had specifically asked them not to do this and was reassured that it wouldn't happen. I have dogs and I was worried about them stepping on or ingesting nails or cigarette butts. I have also called the company's office twice to ask for my 30 year shingle guarantee to be mailed to me and I have never received it.
Pros - quick response, written estimate received quickly after inspection, lots of employees to get the roof done in one day, roof done in one day, nice employees, good looking roof when completed.
Cons - lack of communication from Ben to employees and lack of communication from employees to homeowner, lack of cleaning up nails and cigarette butts after job completed, lack of response from office when I called to have written shingle guarantee mailed to me.
son was there with them.
"In July 2011 we were contracted by (member name removed) to remove & replace a 2 layer roof. We removed & replaced the roof with no complications. Within 2 weeks of the completion it had rained. (member name removed) had called hysterical about his roof leaking. Ben (the owner), was has his house that (member name removed)e day and removed the shingles around the chimney & inspected the flashing (which was installed correctly). The following rain he called again about his roof still leaking. Ben went to his house the (member name removed)e day and found that his chimney cap & siding on the chimney was the source of the leak. Ben partially removed some siding so he could take pictures of the chimney the damage that had been caused. He put everything back together and sealed it with a product called flex seal (which was only a band aid). Ben then went under the carport with Mr. (member name removed) and went over his findings and explained that he needed to hire a chimney guy to come out and fix/replace his chimney. At that point Mr. (member name removed) got extremely upset and for some reason thought we were responsible for his chimney cap & chimney leaking and the interior damage. We were contracted to replace the roof his leak is not due to the roof or the flashing from the roof to the chimney. The leak is all above that. We don’t work on or replace chimneys, nor were we hired to work on or replace his chimney. At this point (member name removed) still had not paid us in full for his roof & threatened no to pay us unless we fixed his paint inside. We waited until it rained again the caulking had stopped the leak so we hired a local drywall/painter to come and paint his entire ceiling do we would receive payment for the completed job. The cost was $800.00 for his ceiling, this was not our problem but we did this because to do thrive to make our customers happy even when it is not our fault. Once the painting was complete (member name removed) met Ben at Central Bank in Camdenton, MO. The total bill was $5800.00, he gave Ben a check for $5200.00. He told Ben he didn’t have the $600.00 and wasn’t going to pay it, when Ben told him he had to he said he would send it when he had the money. Here we are 2-1/2 years later and the chimney just started leaking, he had 2-1/2 years to fix/replace his chimney which he has failed to do so. So he expects Ben to come out every 2 years to caulk his chimney, chimney cap & siding & also paint his ceilings. No one runs a business this way. Now to the warranty, all complete roof replacements come with a 10 year labor warranty if the job is paid in full within 12 months of completion. This warranty covers roof leaks, it doesn’t cover chimneys, chimney caps, siding, windows, etc. But the warranty is voided if the customer doesn’t pay in full within 12 months of completion (which (member name removed) has never paid his remaining $600.00) or if anyone else gets on the roof after we have completed the roof (roofer, contractor, etc.) To the name calling, I can understand (member name removed)’s frustration. Except for he is mad at Ben for his own self neglect to his property. I don’t find it very professional that the he would accuse me of name calling or say that I have treated any of my other customers that way. Seeing that we have been in business for 13 years and I have never done that before or have had a complaint about that. By (member name removed) acting this way, it is not going to get him very far. If he would have fixed the chimney like I told him 2-1/2 years ago, we wouldn’t be in this position today. (member name removed) does not have a warranty and won’t have a warranty because he never paid for the job in full. Ben Krokson Owner/Operator Above & Beyond Roofing 573-280-7159"
