+ -1 moreI was shocked that this builder would not back up their work. I would have a better understanding if it was a "he said, she said" matter. With my research as well as my knowledge from being in the same field of work, plus the standards required for tile installation plainly worded in the TCNA (which I copied for them) it was clear that this builder did not care about "doing the right thing" or producing quality work.
Description of Work: When you buy home from a builder for the most part you expect the home built at least to code/ standards. Well, that is not the case with this builder which cost me at least $4,000 to fix correctly. Properly installed a ceramic tile floor should provide years of service and beauty. While vinyl floor coverings will be replaced several times a tile floor is installed once. A failed tile installation is because the contractor not interested in quality construction but only “cheap” omitted this important part of the floor “system”. Simply the tile was laid directly on the plywood subfloor. If this isn't bad enough the type of plywood used for the subfloor is not of the correct type (luan) for a tile-over-plywood installation. Independent fee based consultant responding on behalf of TCNA. "Luan is not and never has been a suitable underlayment for ceramic tile. It is not dimensional stable and contains sugars which may affect the ability of the cement to cure and develop the required bonding strength."
