This time, I came in for a heartworm test for my dog, a German shepherd. We did not get to see a veterinarian. Instead, the heartworm test was done by two of the office staff, who were very fearful of my dog.
They had no reason to be. The dog showed no signs of aggression. He is extremely well socialized and is a competition obedience dog. He also visits an assisted living facility for older adults and meets elderly people all the time, who pet him and have him do tricks. He has never been aggressive to anyone.
Had they requested that he be muzzled while they took a blood sample for the test, I would have readily agreed.
They told me they saw many aggressive black German shepherds and that was why they were wary of my dog (who is a dark black and tan.)
Anyway, bottom line is that in taking the blood, they hurt my dog -- it was a painful experience for him. And even though the experience was physically painful for him, he didn't growl or show any aggression.
Regarding costs, the heartworm test itself for one dog was $56.41. The medication, Heartgard Plus 51-100 lb six pack, was $97.54. I considered these charges very high.
