The poison situation revealed that the Doctor was less than experienced. The staff had to phone other vets in order to know how to handle the situation. Even though the protocol was listed plainly on the mouse poison. I had no problem with the high expense and slow learning curve. After all, I wanted my dogs to recover.
My issue came when I returned days later to pickup the additional Vitamin K that dogs must take for 30 days after eating the poison. My spouse picked it up and found that they once again had charged an arm and a leg for some vitamins. $70 for 50 vitamins that I can buy on Amazon (and I did) for $15.
If you don't mind paying ridiculous prices for a lack of experience, this is the place for you!
"[Member Name Removed] presented his pets to our clinic late in the afternoon with a history of rodenticide ingestion. He was certain that only one of his dogs had ingested it, so initially, only one dog was treated. It was only after our recommendation that he brought the other dog into the clinic for exam. Rodenticide was noted around the mouth of that second dog. It was at that point that we made a call to a nearby emergency clinic, not to “know how to handle the situation” but to inquire if they had extra activated charcoal to administer to his 2nd pet. We typically do not need enough product on hand to treat two large dogs, so we did not have enough. Instead of telling a. [Member Name Removed] that he had to leave and take his 2nd dog to an emergency clinic for treatment, our office manager drove to the closest emergency clinic, and picked up extra product so that we could save [Member Name Removed]that expensive emergency clinic bill. Both dogs were treated, as protocol dictates. We are uncertain what [Member Name Removed] is interpreting as “lack of experience”. We have successfully treated rodenticide toxicity on many occasions. [Member Name Removed] states that his bill was $700, it was $539.19 to treat both dogs. A trip to the emergency clinic would have cost over $1000. As for the Vitamin K. I’m not certain what product [Member Name Removed]purchased from Amazon for $15, but it likely was not the correct dose. Vitamins found online are typically formulated for humans, meaning that the dose was likely in micrograms, not miligrams. The particular product that we dispensed to [Member Name Removed] is this: http://www.amazon.com/Vitamin-Chewable-Tablets-VetOne-Count/dp/B009T9Q2VO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1435014556&sr=8-1&keywords=vitamin+k+vet+one This product (on Amazon) costs $27 for 50 tablets, and he needed 108 tablets to finish the protocol for both dogs. So charging $70 total was not “ridiculous” pricing"
