We had Duct Doctor out recently to clean our ducts. Admittedly, we've never had our ducts cleaned in the 9+ years we've been in the house, and we've done a lot of renovation, so I am sure there had been quite the buildup in the ducts over the years. I sensed this was the case when in casual conversation upon arrival it was mentioned our job would be a relatively easy one, however, along the course of the way, it was noted our ducts were much dirtier and needed more cleaning than expected. When we decided on Duct Doctor, we did so because of the rave reviews. We had less expensive estimates, but went with Duct Doctor because of the positive feedback and cleanliness noted in those reviews. (We tend to be a little OCD on the neat side of things.) To provide the appropriate context to this review, as noted before, our ducts were dirtier than anticipated, so the job took more work and time than expected. As the job went over the lunch hour (they arrived promptly at eight - thumbs up!), I knew the crew had another job to get to, so I feel some of the attentiveness in the job, specifically to cleanliness and clean up, might have been overlooked in attempting to wrap up things. Along the way, at one point, we had clouds of dust blowing out of return air vents, most all of the vents on the main floor. I was really surprised at this considering everything I knew about this work would have our vents covered to prevent this from happening. With that, we had to entirely dust our main level, along with mopping floors, as things were pretty filthy. Also, the area in the basement where ducts were opened by the furnace was messier than I would have expected. We had a fair amount of metal filings and other debris/gunk from the ducts we had to vacuum up and also had to fully dust as well. In fairness, they did spend a lot of time vacuuming and cleaning, there was just a lot missed. In total, we spent just over two hours cleaning ourselves upon Duct Doctor's departure, not what I originally expected would need to occur based on other reviews. Also, the old air filter was left by the furnace; I would have expected that to be thrown out. Lastly, many of the vent covers when put back on were screwed in beyond snug, creating some bending/denting in the covers. Some of the walls around the vent covers were a little dirty as well. Overall, the crew was very professional, timely, and worked hard, even through their lunch. I'm torn writing this review because I know what it is like to work your tail off and not wrap a job with a pristine finish. On another note, we were out of town the following weekend and upon arrival home, we did notice a substantial difference in the smell of our house after being gone for a few days. In the past, the house had a stale smell to it when we would get home from trips. After the cleaning there was a noticeable improvement. This was the main reason we had the ducts cleaned, so that is a positive. As far as the actual duct cleaning, thumbs up for that. We would consider reusing, but likely only after we've tried another company first.
