Suburban Lawn & Garden

About us

Website: http://suburbanlg.com/services.htm Suburban Lawn & Garden was started by Bill Stueck in the early 1950's as a lawn mowing business while he was in grade school. In the fifty plus years since, Suburban has grown into a multi-faceted retail, wholesale and service organization dedicated to the principles of growing superior products, providing excellent service and always delivering great value. SL&G now operates three garden centers/nurseries: 105th & Roe, Overland Park, KS 135th & Wornall, Kansas City, MO (Martin City) K-7 & Prairie Star Pkwy, Lenexa, KS, (open Spring 2011). Suburban has two growing facilities that supply nearly 75% of the trees, shrubs and bedding plants sold at the nurseries. Suburban also maintains a yard-waste recycling center which accepts yard-waste for recycling into mulch and soil products. The Lawn Care Department operates out of a facility adjacent to the Yard Waste Recycling Center and provides full service grounds maintenance to many customers both commercial and residential. Services include mowing, turf and tree fertilization, shrub pruning and lawn renovation.

I shopped at Suburban for probably over a decade, and the plant quality has been typically good.  They are one of the most expensive nurseries around though, and our last purchase has been not a very good one.
We bought a 3" maple and a 3" linden tree, and had them plant it.  Both trees have done very poorly, and I even called for a warranty on the linden tree as it was losing leaves and not settling in, even towards the end of the warranty period.  This was a $450 purchase for the Linden tree, so I wasn't about to call it a wash.  One of Suburban's tree guys came out, said the mulch was a little high, and pulled back about 1-2" mulch from the base of the tree.  The tree continued to suffer, despite my watering and fertilizing.  Now half the tree is dead.  I called Suburban, and they said it was out of warranty. I argued that when it was under warranty, you more or less denied my claim and the tree is dying in spite of you "expertly" pulling back the mulch.  They then forwarded me to the owner, Matt, who is extremely difficult to get into.
I had to call him 3-4 times before he called me back.  He seemed amenable to replacing the tree with a 2" tree, and said he would send me a picture to make sure that was ok.  Seemed ok, until he never sent the picture, and then now I haven't been able to get him to return my calls for the last two months.
I suppose the moral of the story is, if you have something you need warrantied, push for it.  Disappointed at the outcome here, and I will be taking my money elsewhere.

We have purchased several plants over the past year at Suburban and I love their selection. My two toddlers and I also have purchased quite a few supplies for our fairy garden there. They absolutely love going to Suburban.
When we went to select a new tree for our backyard, the kids were thrilled at riding in a golf cart to go see all the available trees. Our goal was to get the largest maple we could find within our budget. Luckily, they were having a sale and we were able to get the size tree I was hoping to buy. While it is somewhat pricey to get this size tree and have it delivered and installed - it was well worth it. I like the fact that the tree is already a nice size and we had a bird family build a nest in it within a week of its arrival.
The crew arrived on the scheduled day and did a great job with putting in the tree. The kids liked watching the new tree going in - we watched from the window. Overall, looks great and is a good addition to our yard. It is very easy to do business with Suburban and we'll probably add in another tree next year!

They did a great job.  The last time we had mulch spread we got what seemed like a fantastic price.  Well, remember the old adage, you get what you pay for.  The mulch was inferior mulch and they applied no more than just enough to cover the ground.  The following summer we needed to do it again.  However we held off until this summer when Suburban did it.  This time we got a minimum of 4" in all beds and the mulch was good quality mulch of uniform size and color.  Our yard looked fantastic.  That it until the rains came (which can't be blamed on Suburban).  We has some raking to do, but after an hours work, it looked just as good as the day they put it down.  I'm certain we won't need mulch again for at least another 2 years.  Very satisfied.

We love this company!!!  We have bought our plants here for at least 30 years.  They are very high quality albeit on the expensive side.  Even so, we still buy them because of the high quality.  The staff is very knowledgable and helpful.   When they do work at our home  they are punctual and friendly.

Everything went very well.  They were on time and provided helpful information on how to care for the tree.  Furthermore, the tree is thriving.

I asked for a window of time where they expected to deliver the mulch, but they weren't able to accommodate that.  However, I did get a call about an hour before they were to arrive, so that I could put the tarp down on the driveway.  The driver did a fine job of placing all the mulch on the tarp, and of extracting all the mulch out of the truck.  The delivery only took 15 minutes or so from start to finish.  The mulch was very consistent in size and color (Dark Java Brown).  I would definitely use them if I need to place a bulk mulch order again.

Phone staff was friendly and helpful (if busy), and delivery driver was punctual and called when he was on his way.  Driver also accommodated my request for how the mulch got dumped.

Went in on a Sunday to see the woodchip selection. Website had useful program to estimate amount needed. Ordered mulch, it was delivered promptly the next morning to the end of the driveway. It was an easy project to improve the landscaping. Did not do a lot of shopping around, but was cheaper than at least one other nursery and free delivery to our home.
