$110
After verifying that they would serve our area, I mailed in my payment of $110. The service basically works like this: Each week during the spring and summer, on a regular weekly schedule, the company will haul away up to 10 bags or bundles of lawn waste at no additional charge. During the fall the weekly limits increase. For waste in excess of the weekly limit, they will haul away for a small additional charge. As this was our first week, we had accumulated about 16 bags, which after we called, they agreed to haul away for $1 per excess bag. Quite fair in my opinion. All is well so far. An hour or two after our first pickup, the company called and said that in the future, they would like us to call in advance for all future pickups. They explained that as they had experienced several service cancellations in our area, we were too far to serve weekly automatically. I offered to continue service if THEY would call each week, instead of US, the customer, having to remember. They refused this suggestion. I said I would agree to call them weekly if they would reduce the contract fee by say $20 or $30. They refused this suggestion. I explained to them that in my opinion, when they agreed to service us and cashed our check, they became obligated to offer the promised service of automatic weekly pickup according the the bag limit schedule. If declining business no longer made this as profitable, that is unfortunate, but that I have a pretty hard and fast rule about renegotiating contracts once they have started. I really don't appreciate when the renegotiation is entirely one-sided. They wanted more than they bargained for, but didn't want to give us any concession in return. They offered to refund our payment without any subtraction for today's pickup. Hopefully the check will arrive without delay. I understand their motive and their concerns. No one goes into business hoping to lose money or just break even. I don't think they have any intention to scam anyone. But I believe it is very poor form to have seller's remorse and refuse to honor your business obligations simply because you made a bad business judgment. Personally, if I were in their shoes, I would simply suck up the loss on the few territory fringe customers for one year and simply refuse to serve the next year. At least that way I wouldn't have the bad taste associated with rapidly trying to find alternate service and would likely be inclined to consider them for future service if I move back into their core service area. Based upon this experience, I will NEVER use them again.
