I didn’t do a complete inspection before making the final payment (my mistake). The day after Heartland left, I noticed several items that required attention. I sent an email and was assured that they would return within a week. Two months later with occasional ignored emails and phone calls, I was finally successful in reaching them by phone. We agreed to meet on a Friday at 4pm to review what needed to be done. At 4:50pm, I called to make sure they were still coming out. I was told that yes they were finishing up a job and would be out shortly. At 6pm, I gave up waiting. There was no communication from them to set up an alternative meeting. I haven’t been in contact with them since.
There are three wooden support columns that were left in place that they railing was attached to. The bottoms of each post had varying degrees of rot. It was felt that the damage could be repaired. The quality of repair to those columns was very poor: The repaired portions of the posts looks terrible; portions of the posts (repainted white to match the vinyl) still show the original color bleeding through; the support brackets for the railing were too big and the part that extended beyond the post was caulked on two of the posts (which looks acceptable) but it wasn't done on the third post.
In addition to the problem with the posts, there were two items that I would consider poor quality with the railing installation. The first is that it appears that one section of the railing was cut too short and had to be fixed with three layered boards. The second is that the end railing was not installed square—there is a definite angle as it runs from post to house.
worked thru email and phone and was prompt in response.
arrived and finished as quoted.
was more than fair in working with changes as they occurred by me.
In the end I ended up with poor quality of craftsmanship in the wood work completed, poor quality of staining, and a railing - drink rail that was contracted to be a 2 x 8 cedar board, while a 1 x 6 was installed. The thickness of the 1 x 6 is not able to hold the weight of any pressure, so sagging has ensued. I documented the events to the vendor, asking he replace these boards. When that wasn't completed after several weeks, even after they stated they would, I wrote a letter indicating that a refund was due to me, allowing credit for the 1 x 6, and indicated a deadline of the check to be received by September 5, 2013 (six business days from date of letter). Although a response, via email, to my letter indicated a check would be mailed out immediately, along with some unprofessional comments, the check did not arrive on the 5th as requested.
Ultimately the check did arrive, but I would not recommend this contractor based on my experience. Overall the events leading up to conclusion took over two months, and now I'm left with replacing the rails, and addressing the other smaller items that were completed in poor quality.
