My first concern was that Chris had charged us twice for a table top (quartz) that was attached to the end of one counter. It turned out to be a much larger problem and more involved.
First, this is a copy of the texts between Chris Reyes and myself since the completion of this project:
Nov. 3, after he had received a voice mail from me,
Chris: the island was shown as what it would cost for entry level and then what is shown as the upgrade. Like the rest of the job. so we didnt charge you twice
SR: Chris, I am really upset about what you charged us for the quartz. I have done a lot of shopping for quartz in the last few years and I have never talked to any person involved with selling it that indicated any Quartz sold for $144 a sq. ft. In fact, every person said it was never over $100--that is from Denver to Des Moines. I would like to know where you got it. I'd also like to know why you charged us for 12 sq. ft when it was only 9 sq ft.
Chris: If you remember correctly when we first talked about quartz I told you that I don't get it and I have to pay whatever I'm charged for the material and now is not the time for either one if us to be arguing about the quartz you said you had to have.....the paperwork has not changed and you had plenty of time to look at it before we ever began Sharon. I'm sorry if you feel like you've been cheated but you saw the paperwork and it hasn't changed I absolutely will not offer you a refund as that is not fair to me since I told you what the circumstances were much before we started. I felt this needed to be in writing so that there was no mistaking my intentions. I am very glad that you are happy about how your tops turned out and hope that you see this should have been discussed much before now for sure.
SR: Chris, I don't care what stage we are in--if I'm uncomfortable with some part of this condo redo, everyone is going to hear about it. I have worked with you enough times and Dan had also encouraged us to use you, that we thoroughly trusted you enough to be fair in any situation!!!! And, we on't think you've been close to fair. I still want to know where you got the Cambria and i still want to know why you charged us for 12 sq ft instead of 9 sq ft for the table.:
Chris: I really don't care if you think I've been fair or not...I get to sleep quite well at night knowing that I have been. the table was 9 sq ft and the piece that goes between the table and the peninsula required me to buy 12 sq ft. So you tell who you have to just remember there are 2 sides to your story. Not going to have you or anyone else try and strong arm ne and be hateful and then you think I am just supposed to owe you for something we talked in depth about. Sorry won't happen. We don't go backwards after the fact. Just know that would be my stance
SR: First, Chris, I don't have any idea when or where I tried to strong arm you. Have I given you any ultimatums or threats? So far I have only tried to get a couple of facts from you and express my dissatisfaction with how the bill was presented to us, Please remember I didn't even consider two colors util the end and I don't remember one time you picked up the phone or came to see me so how could you say we have talked about anything "in depth." How could you possibly think I would pay an extra $900 for a 9 x 9 sq ft table when i could have simply extended the main color. Did you ever discuss the bill with us? Did you ever offer us a 10% senior citizen discount? Or did we talk about that during the I depth conversation we had and I just turned it down? I am still waiting to receive the name of the place you got the quartz.
Chris: this text was sent to you before I even sent the proposal...$9,640 for all Whitney except for the drop down table and reduce by $700 if we do it all the same material
SR: You are correct Chris. I received the approximate 25 word text message in September. I do not call that an in depth discussion. For example: we ordered new Hunter Douglas for 102. The consultant came to our condo twice before placing the order. We discussed the cost of each of three different methods of opening and closing the shades; by hand battery remote or electrical remote. He wrote each of the proposals out separately-explained the extra costs of electrical work, battery cost, which may last the longest etc. this is what I call an in depth discussion! I would still appreciate direct answers to the questions I sent you on previous notes,
SR: Okay, Chris, one more opportunity--I need answers to every question in the above messages.
The most important one is where you got the quart you used in our condo 102. If you choose not to answer that is fine however I will pursue the answers myself then. I will talk to everyone in KC and surrounding areas that sell Cambria.
Chris: Sharon as I had said before you have to do what you have to do . you got an invoice you paid it I was never secretive about it. We are done and now you want some type of refund? Sorry that will not happen. It makes me realize why I didnt want to help to begin with. I even told Jim with MS International I didn't want to help because of this craziness. Again my company is not a supplier of Cambria I paid a premium price for it because of that. I told you I would and even the price was given to you , I will absolutely not keep talking about those facts as we are repeating now.
THIS IS THE END OF OUR COMMUNICATIONS.
Here are some of my thoughts. Chris worked for us before. We hired him to put granite in our house in 2010(?). Last year we had him put white quartz in our first condo. We did not specify Cambria so he got white quartz from MSI (Q Premium Natural Quartz). We had a long piece put on the built ins in the bedroom which had to be cut into two pieces. Within a day I noticed that the two pieces didn?t match. Within a few weeks I became concerned about the quality of the quartz?more precisely the finish on it. To make a log story short Chris ended up replacing the pieces in the bedroom and MSI replaced two of the four pieces in the kitchen area due to the finish. We choose not to have the other two pieces replaced due to a granite sink in one and a mirror induction stovetop in the other,
In all my dealings with Chris I never once heard him indicate he didn?t want to work with us or help. I never heard anything about craziness?I still don?t understand where he thinks the craziness is! Mark and Jim at MSI were wonderful to work with and not once gave us a clue that they were unwilling to work with us. In fact, they both admitted that there was a problem with the finish on their quartz and they wanted to make it right for us.
Remember that Chris said that ?the piece that goes between the table and the peninsula required me to buy 12 sq. ft.??That piece measures 25? by 5 1/8?.
I see on Chris?s company website that he offers a 10% senior discount. My husband and I are both over 65 but he didn?t say a word about it to us.
It is my understanding that Chris is also trying to get into a different business in Wichita?perhaps his heart is not in this work anymore. There is a review that was done on July 1, 2013. Folks, everything in that review sound exactly the Chris Reyes we worked with this year. He came across as our best friends, like this is his life-time passion, and he often mentioned he was very professional. I also agree with the comment the he does not take criticism well?in fact, look at
"My alternate resolution is to do research before a job is done if the pricing is not right. I told your member my customer [Member Name Removed] and also shared with her the cost. Its not like we just sprung it on her and even then she had the opportunity to discuss it. We would not have started or finished without her expressed consent. No matter what she signed a final check and so that should make it final. The job is great or she would not have wrote a check to finalize our deal not matter what."
I absolutely recommend Countertop Solutions for your next granite project. Except for a couple of miscommunications about installation times during the holiday season, we are extremely pleased with our new countertops!!!
After a few bids for composite countertops at the big box stores, we looked up Angie's List providers and called Chris Reyes. He arrived promptly and explained his passion and experience. We mentioned we didn't consider granite because the previous stores said there would be seams. He eye-balled our kitchen told us that the granite slabs at his recommended providers would be big enough to cut and give us seamless surfaces. He also explained that his granite pricing would be very comparable to composite or laminate. He measured the countertops and gave us a price was substantially less than the big box stores. He gave us names of some granite providers and other contactors. We hand picked our granite at Stone & Beyond before Thanksgiving and ok'd the project for December installation. A few weeks later ,his installer, Umberto came to our house created "templates" of our countertops and took our new replacement sink to their shop to make sure they cut-out the right size hole. I visited the shop to see our slab and find out how they would be working on our counters. Umberto was very courteous and knowledgeable of his craft. He explained the granite would be cut the day before the installation. Umberto and his co-worker did a great job in replacing our old countertops with the new granite. When it was apparent that the previous builder had done a bad job on securing part of a backsplash, Umberto said that although he could not salvage the tiles, he would cut a piece of granite at no charge and make it a backsplash and install it a week later.
We hope you consider Countertop Solutions for your next project.
"We did damage the glass cooktop. The inexperienced contractor who put it in glued it to the Formica instead of putting the simple clips that come with all cooktops on. I ordered a brand new glass replacement valued at just over $300 and contacted an appliance technician the same day this occurred. We asked to put it in on the following Saturday but she said we could not come. The installation is being done by a technician who is not on my payroll I have had them reschedule three times now and they finally told me May 6th. I have kept in contact with the customer every step of the way. This customer and I physically went to my sink supplier together and hand selected the sinks in question. They are sinks we use in most of our home projects. Her physical hand selection is documented on the proposal, the invoice and stated in 2 different emails. These are great sinks."
Because of new sink size the side cabinet's needed to cut. Countertop solution sent cabinet person to fix it.
Plumbing work was done by Tim the person recomended by Countertop solution. Backsplash tile work was done by Juan also recomended by Countertop solution. ( about $700 for labor of these 2 works. this price not included in above price)
"I am so glad that you were able to take the time to find that Angies List will deny the claim from this customer. I have taken so long to respond because I really wanted to find a short sweet way to properly answer this new finding. As you said that you heard in our conversations I am very serious about making sure that my customers are thoroughly happy. It is disappointing that this info has to stay at all considering most of it is false information. I never denied that there were items that needed our attention and would never have left this job or any with less than perfect results. I think it stemmed from my denying employment because after that there was no love lost on their part. Luckily even though your companies position is not to find out who is right or wrong there is some truth brought to the surface by denying the claim. Originally the representative from Angies List told me that since we had won the Angies List Super Service Award we should concentrate on it and the fact that there were so many folks saying great things about each of us individually. I could not let it go because again we are passionate about making sure that each and every customer gets what they are paying us for. Everything is itemized and all I's are dotted and every T is crossed to keep both parties from this type of interaction. There is no pressure from my company. We take our time to make sure that we find out every design idea we can from our potential customer and if needed add a little flair from our many years of expertise. We give references from folks we havent even finished with and ask that they call them after were done. What other company is that confident. We bid for free and have free designer help. We offer tile at what we pay for it in our own homes which is at least 50% off and we also offer door pulls hinges and more at cost. Other things that arent offered by my competition. Thanks so much Heather for taking the time to help put my mind more at ease because this shadow was hard on us."
"Unfortunately this review makes me seem very pompous. As with all my customers I truly care about their feelings and how the install goes. As stated within the review this couple had never saw any seams to know what one looked like. As I came back to talk to them about the seam I noted that there only real concern was that the seam was too big. I challenge any company to come and make the seam smaller than what they currently have. It will not happen. Many companies will say they can do a better job but you will not find them here on Angie's List. The facts are that we did come back to take care of the things we knew were not completely right. Even offered to come and fill in dirt and seed if needed. Our seams are the tightest in the industry and to insure that, we have a Gorilla seam setter to mechanically offer that. I asked them to please go to some open houses to see what other companies seams look like so they can see that ours is top notch and hopefully not feel like they were getting something less than what they paid for. They both told me that he would. He said he already had planned to do that within a few days. Now a full week later and 2 different attempts to contact them to verify whether they had seen the seams or not have been ignored. I can only say please reread the part where money was asked to be refunded and then said that they didn't really want that to have that happen. I asked them to have another company come and tell me they could do a better job on the seam. They couldn't find a company that would. If I had said that I could do a better job at a home show I would be so willing to back up my work and my word I would have sent my men to follow up at no charge because I would not want to charge someone for something they had already paid for. One of my competitors has advertised for years that their seams are within a 1/16" and they are as busy as we are. It disappoints me that this couple has not completely followed through with looking at other seams before they decided to post the misleading information. However as I have hopefully stated I am 100% comfortable with the outcome of how the seam is very level, tight and color matched. No other company color matches their seam that I know of. They put one neutral color in the granite all the way through and is not even close to seamless. Message here is please take the time to look at seams and then you will know what to expect and we will exceed that expectation like all of out other customers have said we did. My offer has not changed. Find someone who can do it better and we will talk more then. I know that if you saw any seams they are at best similar to ours. It's not fair to the men that did such a good job in your kitchen to not completely follow up before you leave negative feedback. We will make it right if you can find another company that can do it better. That is what we talked about before I left the last time I we spoke in your kitchen. As you said, everything else you liked about the install."
Chris came in and he was professional and I think he caught the vision of what we wanted...seemed to be very intuitive that way. The rest of the bidders....I don't know, I guess the best way i could describe the other contractors was that they seemed to be like used car salesmen. Plus, Chris's bid was by far the least expensive. Plus, the faux painter he recommended was unbelievably inexpensive......3 or 4 times less than other painters...and she did a good job.
Overall, very good experience. I would recommend him to anyone.
