He confirmed my previous deck was dangerous.  We designed a replacement together.  He asked many questions to clarify details.  I took numerous notes on the issues and our mutual resolutions (excellent dialogue).  He and an able assistant built the replacement deck over the course of two weeks.

Excellent work, easy to discuss needs of home with Rex. Detail-oriented. Neat, leaves home in great shape. Basement went from a concrete room to a very nice living space, now use it as family room and possibly (in future) as apartment-type space for visiting family. He's finishing up the walls in the family room right now and am quite pleased. Will jump in and try to problem-solve other issues I might have (as when I was trying to replace an outside faucet piece and parts didn't quite fit with one another).

From a rough sketch on how to completely redesign the master bedroom and bathroom area, Rex helped us with the design and then executed the plan flawlessly. The work included moving walls, designing a new bathroom space, installing a new bathroom with glass shower, built-in bathtub, ceramic tile floors. He oversaw the installation of the custom cabinetry and granite sink top and surround for the tub as well. He interacted well with the subcontracted cabinetry shop. Our house had aluminum wiring. We intended to replace just the wiring in the rooms we had gutted, but it became obvious that he knows what he's doing, so we expanded the project to include several other rooms. He is very gifted in getting new wires into locations that are tricky with a minimum of damage to the exisiting walls. We had the sprayed on textured ceilings and they were messed up pretty bad from moving walls etc. He was able to remove the remaining texture, patch in dry wall and repair the defects very well. We planned to do do some painting ourselves, but we ran out of time and he ended up doing the paint work. He did a VERY good job in this area as well. He offered to give us a fixed estimate or work with us on hourly basis. Since he seemed trustworthy (and we know some other customers who gave him good reviews) we decided to go with hourly rate. We were pleased. He always was working when here, so we never had the feeling we were paying him to sit around. We gave him money up front ( a modest ammount) for materials and he gave us the reciepts, such that we never wondered where they money went. I am a pretty experienced woodworker myself and have done a lot of home improvement projects. I have a reputation for being a perfectioinst. A couple of days I took vacation and helped out and I learned a lot of new tricks and was pleased with his workmanship. He's one of the only contractors I have ever hired that I didn't have some major gripes with by the end of the process. When we first heard about him a couple years ago, he had a long waiting list. With the current (8/3/2009) economy it seems he is more readily available and I would not be afraid to approach him with a job that was smaller than ours, FYI.
