So, I'm alone and had driven about 400 miles when I had to stop and get gas. As I started the engine after filling up I noticed the Jeep was running a bit rough, slight physical shake. Within a couple minutes the check engine light came on. At this point in my trip it was late at night and I still had about 200 miles to go. Against my better judgement, I got back on the road and drove cautiously to Joplin, MO where I stopped for the night and got a hotel room.
The next morning I figured I needed to figure out what was wrong with the Jeep but I was just traveling through town (didn't know a soul). I called up Angie's list to find a mechanic. I received a list of 5 but Top-Tech seemed to be the best from the list. I gave them a call and ended up speaking with the owner (Larry Poole). I explained my car troubles and asked if he might be able to check it out in the morning as I really needed to get back on the road in order to get to my new location in time to start work on my scheduled first day. He explained that he was too busy in the morning but would try to fit me in in the afternoon (which I completely understood). In the meantime though, he suggested I got to the local Autozone and have them check the codes and then call him back. Autozone gave me the codes, "misfire on cylinder 3", and I then drove over to Top-Tech as I had no place else to go (I figured I'd just wait around). Mr. Poole returned from an errand, noticed me parked on the street, and came over to see what Autozone said. I explained the error code to which he figure I had a bad plug or wire. He proceeded to removed the plug and sure enough it was bad. He went back in his shop to look for a plug and returned with one at which point he installed it. We turned the Jeep on; problem solved. Mind you, he did this even though he had cars on racks and parked outside.
I asked him, "how much?" He replied, "Just have a safe trip and get this Jeep tuned up when you get to Michigan." I argued that I would gladly pay but he wanted nothing of it.
I don't have the words to describe this gentleman's kindness to me in such a desperate situation. By the way, I made it to my destination late that evening. God bless you Mr. Poole.
