I have a home warranty through American Home Shield (AHS) which I have kept since I purchased the house in November 2010. On June 12, I turned on the AC at the thermostat for the first time this season. There was a loud explosion from the basement and white smoke began to billow from the vents in the house. There was also a burning smell. I shut off the AC at the thermostat and immediately called AHS. I was told that Affordable Home Services LLC would be my assigned service provider and they would be contacting me to arrange a time to come out.
I received the call and was told the technician would be out between 2 and 4pm that afternoon. Because the house was so hot and the temp was predicted to be 97 degrees that day, I asked if someone couldn't come sooner and was told no.The technician called about 2pm to let me know he was on his way. Don arrived about 3pm and went right to work. I followed him to the basement to the furnace/aire exhanger. He sat on the floor, took the front cover off, stuck some metal tool inside the guts of the furnace and blue sparks popped out. He fell back and said, and quot;Dang, guess I shouldn't have done that. Should have made sure there was no electricity flowing through there first.and quot; I went to the breaker box and shut all AC and heat breakers off. I decided to go upstairs and leave him to his work. At about 4:30, Don came upstairs and said the motor was burned out and he didn't have the right sized motor on his truck and he'd have to come back the next day. I told him I'd already taken one day off from work and couldn't take another entire day off to wait for him to come back. He assured me that someone would call and they would arrange a time convenient to my schedule.
At 11:02am this morning (6/13/13), I called Affordable and spoke with Charles or Charlie. He said the only time slot available was between 1 and 3 and if that didn't work, someone would have to come out the following day. I made arrangements for my cousin, Phyllis, to be at the house between 1-3, called Charles/Charlie back (11:08) and said someone would be at the house. At 2:37 pm this afternoon (and I know the exact time because all call times are shown on my mobile phone), I called Affordable and said it was 2:37 and no one had shown up or called yet. I was told Don was in Jefferson County on a job and my job was next on the list. According to my husband, John, Don showed up at 3:31pm according to a text from my husband. At 4:10, I got a text from husband that read, and quot; It's not working. The AC won't come on at all.and quot; I texted back and asked if the breakers were on and if the thermostat AC button was on. At 4:13pm, my husband texted me, and quot;I think he blew a fuse.and quot; At 4:20 the text was, and quot;It started burning again. There is smoke in the house.and quot; The upshot was that the brand new motor got burned up. How, I do not know. The technician called me and said something about a part had been installed incorrectly. He then started yelling and said and quot;i have 134 years experience. I'm a professional.and quot; Then, he left the house. My husband then called and said the tech had been in the basement, swearing, and saying and quot;I don't need this s***.and quot; My husband expressed concern that the tech wasn't competent and, unfortunately, I think expressed that to the tech directly.
I called AHS and told them what I knew and they said that Affordable had called them and said they refused to finish the job and wouldn't come back to the house. AHS said they would find another company.So...I still have no AC. I don't have a definite schedule with another company to come out and fix whatever is wrong with the air exchanger. But, Affordable Home Services LLC will never get a call from me again and I recommended to AHS to take them off their service provider list. I wasn't comfortable with Don, the Technician, from the start and his storming out of the house was incredibly unprofessional.

I am telling you Charlie is amazing and fantastic. He has been our air guy for quite a few years now. If it's broke, he can fix it. He is not only knowledgeable but doesn't ever charge an arm and a leg. Sometimes if Charlie is busy or can't come out he has sent others from his crew and everyone is really great. What we lilke the most about Affordable Home Care is just that, they ARE affordable!!! They are flexible with your schedule, considerate and prompt and just so trustworthy. We know, when we have a problem that Charlie will take care of it right away. He is now like family to us. Our AC and furnace is pretty old and we have been nursing it every year to try to make it last another year and another year before we are forced to buy a new one. Charlie really makes that happen for us!! When the day comes when we do have to buy something new.... we will come to Charlie to install it. He IS THE BEST!!!!!

I called Mr. Hoffman in the morning and he was able to send a serviceman out the same afternoon. The serviceman did not have the part that was needed, and arranged to come back the next afternoon. He was in and out in 10 minutes, left no mess. The washing machine has been working like new ever since.
Mr. Hoffman told me if this machine cost much more than what we paid to have it fixed he suggest we have it replaced. I found him to be an honest repairman and would definitely recommend him in the future.

They first came out on 5 o'clock on Friday which was the coldest weekend after winter. They were willing to come out on Saturday and they normally don't do that. They separately had to put a fix in place and they couldn't get the part so we had to wait until Monday. They came back on Monday early morning and fixed it. They were extremely responsive and very knowledgeable. I had actually called someone else in town that I knew before and thought they would be able to fix it faster. They came out, checked the furnace and fixed something that wasn't broken. I was really pleased that this company knows exactly what to do and they were very responsive in fixing it. They were very professional and offered other advice as far as other issues that they saw with our aging furnace system. I ended up going with a service contract with them also for the maintenance service which is not included under our home insurance policy. They were like half the price compared to other companies I had talked to.

I told the technician not to go in my neighbor's yard, but he went on the neighbor's driveway anyway. The neighbor actually called the police, and I had to pay $1200 in legal fees for a ridiculous "trespassing" incident. The fan that they installed was too big for the unit and when they came back to fix it they just bent it. Now my a/c unit is noisy and I wonder if it's using excessive energy as well.

At first it seemed just fine. The new disposal was installed and worked properly. However a few weeks later, I reached under the sink to grab something and noticed a puddle of water. It turns out, the new disposal was smaller in size (but still the same HP). Instead of refitting new PVC drain pipes to make sure they all fit together properly, they just used the old ones, which just barely fit back together. So, although it looked good, the drain pipes didn't seal all the way. This should have been obvious to the person making the repair, so its just laziness from what I can tell. A new drain pipe cost me less than $5 at the hardware store. Instead of calling them back to fix it, I decided to spend an otherwise enjoyable evening fixing their screw up my self.

The service person was not friendly and did not introduce himself when he arrived. He was very messy and left baseball size clumps of lint all over the floor around the dryer.
