Handyman Service
Steve of SDB did the worst job I have ever seen from a "professional." I had to hire another contractor to fix the damage done by Steve and to finish several items Steve never did.
Steve was hired to to repair a step on the deck behind the house. He said that he'll have to also repair the stone wall under the deck, which I agreed to. He demolished the stone wall, put less than half of it back up, but didn't finish that part. The rest of the stones were left in a large pile under the deck. The two professionals I contacted to fix this both indicated they consider this more a demolition than a repair. The step itself, which was the problem to be solved, is now in worse shape and out of building code (it wasn't out of code before Steve started).
Steve was also supposed to fix a railing for stairs leading upstairs. I told him the problem was that I can push the rail back against the wall and it looks good, until someone uses it to hold onto while walking the steps, then it comes away from the wall by 1/4 to 1/2 inch. His solution was to push it against the wall and declare it fixed. The first time someone touched the rail it came back away from the wall.
The front door lock was also not working right, I told Steve that depending on the humidity the bolt may close or not, that the alignment was off. He tried it, it worked (low humidity that day), and declared it "fixed." A few days later it didn't lock again.
Steve was asked to paint over a stain on a washroom ceiling. We talked about just painting over the stain or the entire ceiling, I said if just the stain would work and look good, that's ok but I think the ceiling will have to be done. He only painted over the stain. I indicated this didn't look right, so after a lengthy "discussion" he painted the ceiling. It looked worse due to the streaking - looks like he painted every other length of his roller.
Steve painted the front step to the house, but didn't put a "wet paint" sign or any indication of paint there, so my wife accidently stepped on it. Steve refused to fix it until I said that a negative posting here would be made. The repair looks like it was done by a teenager on a part time job.
These are just examples of the poor job done by SDB. I contacted Steve by phone two times to get him to return to finish the work. He refused. I sent him a polite, professional letter with the cost of the second contractor finishing and fixing his work, asking him for the money to pay for this (less than 33% of what I already paid Steve since some of the work he did was acceptable). His response was a threat that if I contact him again he'll sue me.
While Steve was doing the work at my house, I had to be away on business. My wife was very busy with other things and was not involved in my speaking with contractors. She didn't know what to look for, so paid Steve when he claimed to be finish. This obviously was our error; she should have been more involved and check the work prior to paying Steve.
