"Bryan D. I apologize for the delay in addressing your complaint. It's been over a year since we made this contract. I wanted to review the documents and try to remember everything that transpired. You are correct, we did send you a contract in the $400 range. The final sum for all work was in the $1200 range. The very day we sent the contract, you called me on the phone and requested additional work. I was on a jobsite, so my wife wrote up a second estimate and emailed it to you. On October 30, 2018 you emailed me scanned copies of the original contract, and the additional work estimate with signed authorization pages for each document. I wanted you to sign a rewritten contract that reflected the price change, but I couldn't do that until the end of the day when I was back in the office. You indicated an imminent departure on a trip, and said the signed authorization pages would suffice. Yes, this was unusual. I do prefer to have every detail (especially price) clearly defined. I hope you can see there was never any intent to mislead you. You contracted me to work for your mom's home, but you were paying for it. I don't think she was aware of the contract details. I did my best to accommodate her wishes ? I even installed more siding than was contracted, including those corner pieces she found. However, as she persisted to request more and more work, I did have to draw the line. As to the allegations regarding quality of work: I did my very best using old siding and paint supplied by your Mom. I have no idea of the age of the paint, or how it had been stored. I cannot offer quality guarantees when using customer supplied materials ? especially paints. I am still happy to do the work, because it saves you money."
"Thanks for your review Mike. It's certainly a valid concern which I prefer to avoid. Every working person with kids has probably experienced the crunch of having a baby sitter cancel last minute. When it happens to me I have to weigh all the possibilities (including safety and missing deadlines). In our hyper-litigious society it's pretty dangerous for my kids to see what their Dad does. Great point, and thanks again for the review."
"At Marshall Improvements I can be hired by bid, or by the hour. I'm always happy to provide receipts to customers under two conditions: 1: A customer plans to reimburse me promptly on purchase. 2: My services are contracted on an hourly basis. I have customers who like bids, and some who prefer to hire me hourly. Either way works, and these details are clearly established in the contract process. The good thing about accepting a bid (such as your remodel) is you were quoted one price, and you paid that same price. I apologize that I couldn't satisfy your curiosity about the financial side of my business, but completing the remodel of your bathroom within the deadline you set caused me to fall behind on a lot of office work. It took about a week and a half just to catch up with all the quotes and requests that had piled up."
