Took a long time for them to come out from the time I purchased the Angies List coupon until the day the actual job was done. Once here job seems to be satisfactory as they did what was outlined in the job details. Owner seems like a nice guy but business almost has too much business/not enough workers and should hold off on offering coupons until a slower time of the year when jobs can be done in a more timely fashion.

I agree that it did take longer than it normally would to clean this clients gutters. We had such a tremendous response that I did hire additional staff to try to get to all of the cleaning projects quickly, but the reality is that we were overwhelmed. I cannot hire someone then turn around a month later and let them go when we get caught up with the cleanings. I did keep in touch every few days to let him know that we were running behind and my guys did a great job.

Everything went great. The only hitch was that nobody ever called me to set up an appointment.....they just showed up. Fortunately the timing was good.
Description of Work: $99 Gutter tune-up. A team of workers showed up and asked if there were any specific problems or concerns. He explained the service and went to work. Everything that I mentioned was addressed. They were finished very quickly. Afterwards, he explained precisely what he found and what was done about it. A very good service at a bargain price. I highly recommend it.

This was our first time having to replace a roof and, unfortunately for us, it had to be at our own expense because of the age of the roof (23 years). We contacted four Angie's List companies and presented the same set of circumstances to each and then compared bids the same way. The bids were all within $500 of each other, so it came down to the fine print, so to speak. Lawler impressed us from the beginning by sitting down with us and explaining step-by-step what the process would be, presenting samples of the materials being recommended and why and then clinched the deal when they offered to upgrade to lifetime architectural shingles at no additional cost. During this process, they also offered a "Big Deal" through Angie's List, which we purchased and which represented an additional savings to us of $1100. It happened precisely as it was explained to us: first the materials were delivered, followed a day or two later by the crew, who arrived on time and immediately set to work. Altogether, it took them 3 complete days. The crew was friendly and polite and each day they went through the yard picking up and disposing of the roof debris. They also replaced some capping for us and straightened out a roof vent that had apparently suffered some wind damage. We would hire them again for any type of exterior work.

We are so happy to have found Lawler Roofing. We first visited with Bill Lawler who measured and within a few days visited us again with an estimate and date that the work could begin. Bill was prompt and courteous at each visit. We were provided with shingle samples and addresses where we could see each of the samples on existing homes which was very helpful. The work crew arrived at the specified time. They were courteous, friendly, answered questions if we asked and were young men we would be proud to know. We were also impressed with their work ethic.

I was pleased with the service. The price was reasonable considering my roof is fairly large and I added gutter covers and drip line protection. I got my quote in a timely fashion, and they were patient working with my questions as I made up my mind about choosing them. It took a couple weeks to get on the schedule but all the work was done in a day. The crew left the yard clean and undamaged. I had a question about the flashing on my chimney and noted my end gable vents had not yet been covered. The crew chief returned the following Saturday AM, answered by question politely and then covered the gable vents very quickly. There was some confusion when I went to pay. My first electronically sent check didn't actually leave my bank through my error and then my second check got misplaced at Lawler's. We had a few phone calls and emails over these payments but through there was some confusion, Mr Lawler was polite and patient through out. Overall the entire service went smoothly and we are very happy with our new roof and gutter covers. We wouldn't hesitate to use Lawler again.

He was very punctual, very professional, he gave me some information which I thought was very truthful, the only reason I didn't tell him to go ahead and do it at the time is I wanted to check him out on the internet and the better business bureau and so forth, which I did, and my only question about that was he only used a certain product and there was a lawsuit against that company because of the quality of their manufactured goods. The guy that we're talking about is the only one who noticed that there wasn't salt underneath all of the roof shingles, which is a major no-no. The plywood sheathing was wet and moldy.

Angie's List advertised a special complete roof replacement for a 2,000 square foot roof from Lawler Custom Exteriors for $4,980. I had a larger roof -- but the additional roof rate was discounted for Angie's List members as well. Jim Lawler made independent website information available to me for evaluating other possible roofing upgrades. I chose several of these, including an upgrade to 30 lb. felt, a drip edge system, ice and water shields on the eve lines and a ridge vent system. In the contract, it was stated that replacement of damaged decking and additional flashing would cost extra and some of each were required. Jim sent me addresses of homes for which his company replaced roofs with materials of the colors and style available to me. It was very helpful to be able to see the finished roofing jobs done by his company and how the shingle colors looked installed on homes similar to mine before making any final decisions on shingle color. Because Lawler Custom Exteriors was so well organized, all of the information I needed to make choices was sent to me by email by Jim and his staff, even before I asked for it. I was very pleased with the responsiveness of Jim and his crew. I had a home insurance policy premium due and was told by the insurance company that my rate would be lower if a new roof was installed. When I told Jim of this situation, he made sure that my job was completed before the insurance company deadline. All work was completed in two days and because of their ability to schedule my job when I needed it, I got the lower home owner's insurance rate. Before leaving the work site, the crew loaded all of the old roofing and all debris from the new shingle packing materials into a dumpster that was removed shortly after the job was finished. Since two very young children and a small dog live in the house, I was pleased at the way the surrounding yard was cleaned up after the roof was installed.

I found it difficult to get an appointment with this company. The company said they would be out to inspect the roof but would not give me a specific day or time that they would be here, simply saying that I didn't have to be here for the service to be performed. However, once they did make it to my house, I do believe they performed a thorough check and made a few repairs to the roof where they found a few loose shingles.

It looked like there might be a leak on my roof around my skylight – I’d seen a water mark on my ceiling and thought it might be from the skylight. He was on my roof for 5 minutes; I had him come back and seal around my skylight. He then sends me an estimate for $3,000 to replace my skylight. I don’t even know if he did the work! For what I paid, I don’t think I got the value of the work done.

What is the old saying, "Don't shoot the messenger"? This member received a great value for $199. That is what we charge to buy the skylight sealer, buy the gas to drive out to her residence, pay a professional to drive to and from her residence, setup a ladder and perform the necessary repairs. I'm sure that it took more that 5 minutes to properly seal 5 skylights. I'm sorry that she needs her skylights replaced at a cost of $3000 which includes 5 new brand new top of the line model skylights installed and includes a LIFETIME installation warranty. What is that other old saying "you can't make all of the people happy all of the time"? I guess somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Ha!

During the spring of 2012, we noticed that there appeared to be some irregularities with the roof. On additional inspection by 2 professional inspectors, we were told that the entire deck should have been replaced due to the "spongy" feel of the roof.. Although several representatives for Mr. Lawler's company did come to address our concerns, Mr. Lawler himself never returned to our property.

This is a case of "buyer's remorse". Lie # 1. I was never advised to replace all of the plywood decking. Who would have told me this before we started, and why would I refuse to do additional work and make extra money? Lie # 2. There were no irregularities with this roof. This member wanted me to return because an out of town "storm chaser", NOT a professional inspector, wanted to sell her a roof with all new 1/2 inch plywood decking. He told her that we should have replaced all of the decking which is another lie (#3). We would never install a roof over rotted plywood. The building code in St. Louis county allows the home builder to use 3/8 inch plywood, which feels "spongy" underfoot when you walk on it. Especially if you weigh more than 200 pounds. If all of the plywood needed to be replaced, we would have replaced it because we make extra money when doing carpentry repairs. Also, we are liable if the new shingles blow off in a mild wind storm. Shingles cannot be properly attached if the plywood is rotted. The nails won't hold. I sent out 3 independent professionals to inspect the roof after she complained and all 3 agreed, in writing, that the roof was properly installed over sound plywood. This member asked for her money back and I refused, so now she gets her revenge by bad mouthing my business. What a loser.

Excellent. Communications concerning what was needed and how it would be done were explained in detail. Questions were answered promptly. Particularly appreciated the ability to communicate electronically, receiving answers quickly to my questions. Also liked the fact that websites were provided for additional information as well as shingle types and color choices, etc. Work was performed as scheduled. Teams performing the work were professional, organized and cleaned up all debris at the end of each day's work.

When the crew finished installing the new roof I was very pleased.... I fully intended to give them an excellent review here. The issue I have is Lawler business practices. A crew member told me there were some boards that needed to be replaced. I said okay and did not hear a word about additional costs. When I received my invoice the bill went from the $5000 advertised special here on Angies list plus $395 I added for some flashing, to $7,379.40. I picked this company because of their reputation here. I am truly sorry I did business with this company. I called the owner and asked him "how could my bill jump $2,000.00 without some one letting me in on the secret...hoping I could get some adjustment, his response was... "I checked my figures and everything was correct and the invoiced amount would not change"....WOW !! Was I shocked... I wish you well if you do business with Jim Lawler

This member tried to blackmail me, plain and simple. Let me explain. We did over $1600 worth of unforeseen carpentry repairs to this guy's roof. After we are finished, this guy tells me that if I take off $1000 from his invoice, that he will give me a good review, and if not, then he will write a bad review. Guess what happened! I refuse to be blackmailed and you can see the result in his review. The truth about what happened is that he was at his house the ENTIRE time that we were there working and my foreman told him that the roof had EXTENSIVE wood rot within a few hours of starting, and that there would be a substantial additional cost for carpentry. Any contractor cannot bid carpentry that is underneath the roof shingles, until the shingles are removed. This member never said that he was concerned about the cost of the carpentry. He never called me to inquire about the cost and he never asked my foreman about the cost. The cost per ft. for carpentry repairs is listed on the contract that he signed and approved. We charge a very reasonable amount for carpentry repairs and for this blackmailer to say that he takes issue with my business practices is laughable. I take issue with his blackmailing tactics. Interestingly enough he paid his invoice in full because he knows that we did the exact amount of carpentry for which he was billed and that he APPROVED in writing. It is a shame that this low life member thinks that he can use Angie's List to try and pull this crap. Thanks for listening.

We hired Lawler Exteriors based on good reviews on Angie's List, so we realize our experience may not be typical, but we weren't totally happy. Never got to meet Mr. Lawler, but he was very nice and professional on the phone. The actual crew didn't speak much English, and communication was difficult. Shingles were delivered on Tuesday, and roofing was supposed to begin Weds. No one came Weds. or Thurs. Tried to contact office, got answering service twice, was eventually told workers would be out Friday. No one came. On Saturday morning, unannounced, roofers showed up. Granted, rain was in forecast some of the time that week, but we'd have liked more communication. Concern about price: we got 2 other bids from smaller companies that were for $1000+ less, and another that was the same price. Mr. Lawler based his bid on the insurance company payout so it was exactly what State Farm would pay. The roofers who bid less didn't ask to see the estimate but based cost on their own measurements, and would have saved us some money. Roofers did a nice job on the house, but our shed didn't look very good--it was barn-shaped, so the big finishing nails they used looked tacky. (Our neighbors also had a similar shed re-roofed, and no nails showing.)The crew worked hard, took a 2-hour lunch break, then finished by late afternoon. We were pleased it only took one day--a positive point. Their vehicles left oil in the driveway, and the big dumpster sat in our driveway until Monday--guess that's not a huge deal. The crew left lots of nails in the gutters, and one left on the driveway caused a flat tire in our car. Mr. Lawler was immediately attentive to that, and offered to pay for repair. We didn't have any other nails on the lawn, so cleanup there was fine. What would have made the experience better? Communication. Also, though an owner can't be on every jobsite, it would have been great to meet some rep from the company before work began, and to have a supervisor come inspect the work when it was completed. We hope this review is perceived as fair and that we weren't being too critical or demanding. In retrospect, we wish we would have chosen a smaller, local company.

I must admit that I am shocked reading this review. When you hire a contractor, please realize that unless a contractor is made aware of an issue, then the contractor cannot rectify a situation. I was never contacted by this member during the project and never made aware of any concerns. I called to make sure that the job was completed and that the customer was happy and they never said a word to me about being unhappy about anything. There was a complaint that this homeowner never met me. I really do try to meet as many homeowners as possible. But it is nice to know that I'm very nice and professional on the phone! I have 5 roofing crews and one of the crews has several workers of Hispanic heritage. All were born here and all speak some English. All crew leaders speak fluent English. Again, I never received a call concerning communication problem. Every customer has my cell phone number. We have the shingles delivered early to every project because we never start to remove the old shingles unless the new shingles are on the jobsite. And yes, it may take a few business days to get started, because our schedule is at the mercy of the weather and at the mercy of the previous project's condition, because if the prior roof requires plywood replacement than that will slow us down considerably. Again, I give every client my cell number in order to have great communication with them. However, communication is a 2 way street. If, I do not receive a call, I cannot read someone's mind and figure out that they are not happy about something. In Missouri the law states that a homeowner is required to pay their deductible on a homeowner's policy claim in order to protect the public from themselves by hiring a disreputable contractor that won't charge the homeowner their $1000 deductible. What most homeowners do not realize is that their are many shortcuts that a roofer can utilize in order to save himself money on installation and the homeowner will never know the difference in installation methods and products until it is too late. The bottom line is that the roof will leak down the road and the roofer is long gone and not coming back. A valley repair alone can cost upwards of $2000. So in the long run, a homeowner will regret trying to save their deductible. If your shed or your home have open eaves, then you will se the roofing nails under the eaves. Unfortunately I never heard anything about oil on the driveway or I'd of removed it immediately. The dumpster company that we use will not remove it on a Saturday. We went back and thoroughly cleaned out the gutters. We always try our best to keep the nails that fall to the driveway from damaging a tire, but we also ask the client to stay off the driveway during installation and until the dumpster is removed. Oops! I reimbursed this member for the tire replacement. YES! I 100% agree that better communication is the key for having a better experience. As I said, communication is a 2 way street. We are a local small business with 25 years of experience. We are A+ rated with the BBB of St. Louis.

(deleted member name) never contacted me about any of these issues. He did not ask for documentation of any kind nor did he ask for any of the photographs that were taken. We would have gladly provided those to him. He simply asked for us to replace the missing shingles on his roof which we did. I seem to remember a Geico commercial that brags about their 98% customer approval rating. I guess (deleted member name) falls into that 2% category of a someone that cannot be satisfied. Roofing is messy, but the crew cleaned up very well. The cost was just a little less less than the two other bids we obtained. The company assumed that it would be possible to use a lift truck to place the roofing materials on the roof. Our driveway turned out to be too narrow for that purpose so that the maerials had to be hoisted up. When the job was completed, the company proposed that we pay an extra fee to cover moving the materials to the roof. That seemed unfair. The company owner quickly dropped his request for an additional amount. However, I don't think we should have been asked for it at all. Be that as it may, we're satisfied with the roof and gutters. I would use the comapny again.
