AT LEAST 15-20 FAMILY MEMBERS AND FREINDS EXPERIENCED THE PAIN OF THE SAND WALKING ON THE DECK AND THE PAIN OF THE SAND ON TOP OF THE COPING WHILE CLIMBING OUY OF THE POOL.
I HAVE ABOUT 25 OHOTOS SHOWING THE CONDITION OF THE CONTRACTORS' REPAIR
As a follow-up to an inquiry at the spring Home Show, a representative of MoCTI came out to the house to provide a quotation on the work we need to have completed. He measured the area, performed a cursory visual inspection of the area, and provided a written estimate for the services. Although he did not pull up the carpeting, we brought to his attention, the difference in the levels of the concrete. The work was scheduled and a different representative of MoCTI arrived to start the project. On removing the carpet, MoCTI was surprised by the extent of the settling difference between the slabs. We discussed options on how to address the shifting; since the settling was observed at a joint (as opposed to a crack), the leveling solutions documented in the marketing materials were not appropriate. We proposed a number of alternatives: grinding across the two slabs to make a smoother transition, filling the seam with concrete and re-cutting to make a new seam, etc. All were rejected out of hand and we were advised that these were not included in the original contract, but "something would be done that we'd love".
On the next visit, the owner/president of MoCTI came out to personally work on the floor. When he asked about the color we wanted, we again referenced the marketing photograph - which included a composite blend of finishes and a series of taped-off patterns to resemble slate segments. He advised us that this wasn't quoted; the quote was for an unpatterned, single color application. He did acknowledge that the original representative should have understood what we wanted (given the photo) and agreed to perform the work as we requested without modification to the quote. However, this is where things started going awry. He installed a base layer of (white) caulk in the seam.
The next visit (made by another MoCTI rep) was to apply the tape to make the pattern and apply the base layer of finish. This was completed without incident.
Once the base layer was dry, the MoCTI owner/president came back out to apply the top coat of finish and seal. After additional discussion on color combinations, he installed the top coat of application as directed. However, he spilled the material on both our front porch (the work was being done in the back) and the exterior of the back patio. These spills were not cleaned up. Once the top coat was applied and the seams caulked, he applied the sealant. Numerous areas around the edges of the porch were missed and some of the sealant was spilled just inside the back door which bubbled and formed a very noticeable hard patch. The seams were still very uneven (worse now that they were no longer covered with carpet) and the caulk remained white, which we raised to MoCTI as inadequate for a final solution. The area had to sit for 7 days and we were going out of town; we were advised to "let it grow on us; if we don't like it when we come back, we'll do something else".
On our return, we still didn't approve of the white caulk on the brown/red floor; we called MoCTI and advised them so. It took several phone calls for the owner/president to finally respond to our calls. He finally came back out and agreed to apply a different (brown) caulk in the seam. This was accomplished, but in a very unprofessional manner. The caulk is uneven (ranging from 1-3" wide and deep); in spots it is pooled and thick and generally unacceptable. We often refer to it as the "river of poo".
Numerous individuals - including family, friends, neighbors, and other vendors that we've called in for remediation advice - have looked at the "finished" product and can't believe that MoCTI felt this was an acceptable job. At no time did MoCTI suggest additional work to do it properly, even if that would have resulted in a change to the original scope; we would have considered additional dollars for a more acceptable solution.
