Dettmer Homes

This review is basically to warn others. Our experience with Dettmer was a disaster. During construction, multiple dislikes and needed changes were pointed out to Dettmer, and our requests were ignored. Problems during this entire ordeal included foundation and drainage problems, shaking floors, small leaky gutters, non-secured and ill fitting counter tops and vanities, persistent stench in the bathrooms and kitchen, loose outlets and smoke detectors, and kitchen cabinets not attached to walls (and wrong size). My family has also experienced mirrors falling of the walls, leaking toilets, and warped cabinets. Dettmer installed a vented, lighted hood in the kitchen and never hooked the exhaust to a vent tube (if you turn on the fan, it will blow down onto the cooking food through the cracks between the hood and the cabinet). To further illustrate their lack of thought, they even put the rough-in for the basement bathroom almost in the middle of the basement. I installed cabinets in the laundry room and discovered that none of the walls were square, and the walls that were there were severely warped. I then checked the entire house and found that almost none of the walls were square and the poor fit of the vanities had been covered up using caulking material. Also, they even let the lawn sod be put down over rock (even when I specifically told them not to). I could go on but ... At the walk-through, problems and defects were pointed out and promptly ignored. They even ignored the smell of gas in the basement (I subsequently called the gas company who immediately came out and found the leak at the water heater. It could have been a disaster.). My wife and I have built a total of 3 homes and Dettmer has been the worst contractor we have ever dealt with. They get away with whatever they think they can. I blame Dettmer, but I also blame the shoddy contractors that they hire. They give their unions a bad name. I even contacted a lawyer concerning everything, and his suggestion was to fix everything myself because it would cost more to file suit against Dettmer. Incidentally, don't rely on Builder's Warranty Group. They are worthless. When I was finally able to contact them (difficult) they told me that unless the house was dangerous or falling down, they would do nothing. Shoddy workmanship + "Don't care" attitude = Dettmer.
