Pros: He seemed a pleasant guy. Smart, friendly, easy-going and businesslike. He measured and calculated the square footage of areas to be painted where others who had bid had just guessed. Cons: He promised to start on Thursday May 22 then put it off for five days (had another job to finish, graduation and funeral to attend, weekend and Memorial Day) By the way, he promised to start on the holiday but then it turned out that he forgot it was a holiday and I only learned that when I called to find out where they were after getting up at the crack of dawn to prepare for them coming. When they finally did arrive on Tuesday it was almost an hour late. He said that he wanted money up front for paint and materials (I explained that I could not do that based on past experiences but would have what he needed on hand. He agreed to that.) Presented a three page contract on the day he began. Since his contract was something like 25 points long I read through it as quickly as I could but thinking, well, if someone wants me to sign something I am going to make sure I understand it. As we started going through the contract, and, in response to his saying that during the work period if things were not going as I liked he would pull off the job and simply charge me for the time worked, I told him that if that was the case I would need to log hours worked by his workers and I also asked him what his charge rate was for his workers. He said $35 an hour and that this rate applied to his inexperienced son who had just graduated high school as well as for the skilled worker who was there to patch the drywall. When I asked how that could be he told me it was due to the cost of workers? compensation. In response to my questions I got a big lecture on how he is trustworthy and trusts people himself, does not base anything on previous negative experiences, got angry and quit. So, I was supposed to love having a big contract shoved at me to sign but he didn?t like having to answer any questions it raised. Businesslike? Nope. I am just glad he showed his true self before we got in any deeper! If you want to hire this guy just be ready to hand over money and not ask any questions. Just trust him.
Description of Work: Kelly was to have done repairs to drywall in several places, applied ceiling texture and painted the upper portions of two main rooms and a stairway.
