Overall, the work was completed, and the initial install went fairly smoothly and in a timely fashion. However, during the install, some ductwork was altered and new vents installed in a way that actually decreased airflow to some rooms. Once the unit was in, it was fairly difficult to get Chapman back to fix their own issues. The sales rep would come by, be very professional and courteous, get everything seemingly set up, and then....nothing. It took nearly a year for everything to be resolved to our satisfaction. This is not to say we didn't have functional heating and cooling. But overall this was a process that was more trouble than it needed to be. In addition, we had some additional concerns in the airflow system of the house (not anything related to Chapman's work) that we would like to have addressed. They were not interested in helping out with this. That's certainly their prerogative, and they were straightforward in this regard. But I was hoping for a more complete experience.
Once our brand new energy efficient system was finally up and running, we saw a substantial INCREASE in our power bills and power consumption. This is over the course of 2 years, so not a small sample size. I had not expected this, and the sales rep certainly stated that we would see much better efficiency than a 30 year old unit. So how did the energy bills go up 20-30%? Chapman did spend some effort reconfiguring the thermostat and such...and some improvement was obtained. But for our substantial expense in getting a new unit, we are saving little money, despite what we were told during the sales aspect.
Overall, Chapman strikes me as a completely competent operation, and I have no major complaints. But if you are looking for a company that will patiently work with you and design the best possible solution based on the quirks of your particular situation, this may not be the company for you. But to be clear, the work was done, what they did is functioning, and we were always treated well by everyone involved. While I don't see this as a company that goes above and beyond, this is a solid company that does a high volume business, and I have no serious complaints. But we may be looking around elsewhere if we have any further needs in heating and cooling.
So, when our furnace went out and lost power when we had a power outage and would not come back on (cold spell in February) we called around for service and everyone was unavailable for days - which was not acceptable. So we bit the bullet and called Chapman; something that we told ourselves we would avoid doing).
The young man came out promptly, as scheduled. We were on the off-hours clock so there was going to be a hefty fee just for it not being Mon-Fri 9-5. He had a difficult time figuring out what the problem was. My husband was there to help guide him some of the time. He called in and got some pointers. Didn't have a replacement fuse so he elected to "hot wire" the connection to bypass the bad fuse, flipped the breaker back and forth a few time to try and make a better connection and then said that a relay or sequencer needed to be replaced. Another technician came out to join him and said that they replaced the sequencer and some wiring that may have been the problem, but couldn't get all four elements running and they didn't know why, so they would have to return. They did get the furnace operating at what they said was 25%. They charged us about 300.00 for this trip and then said they would call to schedule an appointment to finish the work. They came back Monday, looked around, flipped the breaker a few more times, said that all but one element was now working but we needed a new board for the heat pump system. They charged an additional 279.00 for that trip and said our furnace was still only operating at 50%. We asked how much that would cost and were told that they didn't know the price but would call and let us know. Later that week, we received a call and said that it would be a total of 598.00 for putting in the new board. Shocked, I asked them to break down what the cost of the part was and what was the labor. They refused, stating they have a flat rate policy and do not break down prices. Never having dealt with a company that does "flat rate" pricing, we refused the work.
But it doesn't stop there. In March, while on vacation in another state, we had another power outage and the furnace did not go back on that time as well. Instead of calling Chapman, we called a friend whose father has been in the business for over 30 years. They both came out and looked at the unit and were frankly surprised. The went and replaced the fuse (it was still "hot wired"), and replaced both sequencers. They kept them for us to look at, because to their dismay, neither looked like it had been replaced. Both had been covered still with dust and dirt and nothing had been touched. Instead of playing with the breaker switch, they actually replaced the breaker switch. They did verify that the only thing they noticed that had been changed out were a few wires. We also were told that we did not need a new board in the heat pump system. This trip cost us a total of $95.00 for parts and labor.
I am furious at Chapman. Two times now where the work was not up to snuff and we felt like we were really taken or going to be taken, on a nice ride. We won't be using them again and we will be happy to share our experience with anyone who cares to listen.
A final note, last week a technician just showed up on my door step one morning saying he was here to install the new board. Really? Just show up with no appointment and a definite decline for suggested repair.
I am surprised that more people have not logged onto Angie's list to complain, as we have heard from several people that this is their standard of practice.
We had, in the past, a furnace humidifier installed by a different company (Smith Heating and Cooling). It worked the first year but would not work the second. When we called Smith back in, their technician tried to check it out but found that the original tech had installed the unit too close to our wall and so the unit could not be opened to get the filter out. The entire unit was taken off and the new tech decided to put it back on upside down. We questioned this but were promised it would be fine. Which it was not and we wound up with a flooded furnace floor. Being fed up, we called in Chapman Heating and Air Conditioning based on a glowing reference from a family member. We told them to come ready with THEIR options for a humidifier system. They came in, and were very professional in that while they could easily have made jokes or cutting remarks about what Smith had done they simply explained why the unit wasn't working and that they recommended a particular unit for our specific furnace set up. But they did not push anything on us. Just gave us the information and told us to call them if we decided to go with their recommendation. And we did. It has been a relief to have a properly functioning system ever since. And we can ask them about future furnace systems (as ours will need replacing within the next few years), and receive very informative options - but again, no pushing.
We would highly recommend Chapman Heating and Air Conditioning to anyone. And ask them about the Comfort Club - it really is a great way to save and to have a safety net for your heating/air conditioning needs.
